Continued from page 9 the Buffalo Bills (166th pick). The Packers envision Dean (5-10, 215 lbs.) as an inside rurner who can handle heavy duty rushing loads. "We think of him as a fullback," expferins Tbm Braatz, Packers director of football operations. "He's a tough and strong runner. He runs screens and draws real welland has a lot of power in his legs. He can move the pile, can catch the football, and is a wil&TgbkxteM ? Hamilton is on the small side at 5-9, 170 lbs. But he is lough and fast (4.454.46 in the 40). "He was highly productive as a receiver and kick retiier (punts and kickoffeX" said John Butler, director of college scouting for the Bills. "Plus he has a ton courage and will catch the ball anywhere." The seventh round saw Arkansas-Pine Bluff running back Ivory Lee Brown go to the Cardinals (171st pick), while Delaware State tight end David Jones was ^elected by the Chargers (177th pick). The other players chosen in that round were: Gram . bling tight end Franklin Thomas (Detroit Lions, 178th pickX Florida A&M offensive lineman Terry Beaufbrd (Chargers, 192nd pickX and Florida A&M running back Amir Rasul (Bills, 194th pick). Entering the draft, Brown was expected to go a lot higher than the seventh round. But his stock dropped when he showed up at the Indianapolis combine overweight and slow. "He was 243 lbs. and didn't run very good at the combine," Boone pointed out "He's a productive runner, but he gained weight and I think that hurt his position in the draft We feel he can play both running back and fullback. We think hell block. We think he can be an H-back and we think he can catch." At the combine, a bloated Brown ran 4.66. But at 233 lbs., he's been timed at 4.44. As a former tight end, Jones (6-3, 214 lbs.) could wind up seeing some action at H-back in the Chargers one-back system. "He's more of a wide receiver more than anything else," Daniels said. "He gives us versatility, like playing H-back and he's got enough ability to get downfiekl He's a different type of weapon. He runs 4.56, so well use him as a receiver; but he can play some H-back." Beauford (6-i 295 Ibs.X a tackle at FAMU, will most likely move to center or guard because he's loo short to play tackle in the NFL "He could be a good guard or center because he can run and block." said Daniels. "The most interesting thing about him is that he can long snap. He can save us two posi tions on the roster." Rasul's skills fit in very well with what the Billslook for in their noting backs. "He's takmed as a ball carrier and receiver," said Butler. "In our system, a running back has to catch the ball well. Wfe think he is a good, solid, hard-nosed football player Ken Riley gave us a good recommendation." In the eighth round, linebacker Ibdd Wbulard of Alabama A&M was taken by the Los Angeles Raiders (219th). The Lions chose Grambling defen sive end Danyl Milbum in the ninth rouid (231st). Tenth round black college draft choices include: Arkansas Pine-Bluff tight end Rapier Porter (Pack ers, 262nd) and Grambling tight end/wide receiver Andrew Glover (Raiders, 274th). The final three players picked up by NFL teams in the draft were Johnson C. Smith wide receiver Joaquim Weinberg (11th round by Charg ers, 290th), Florida A&M defensive back Antoine Bennett (12th round by Cincinnati Bengals, 322nd) and Winston-Salem State oomeiback Dennis John son (12th round by Raiders, 330th pick overall). That's the 20 that the pros chose. However, there were several drafiable players who were over looked for one reason or another. Central Stale wide receiver Eddie Britten; Tennessee State wide receiv er/kick returner Anthony Owens; Jackson State defensive tackle Chris Gale; Tennessee State comer- ? back Roger Jones; Grambling safety Ivan Geralds; Southern University safety Douglas Craft; and Tbv * nessee State fullback Tim Cross. - G.D.
