SI AC SPRING SPORTS
This year's SIAC Spring Sports Cham
pionships saw the wealth being spread
around. There was no domination fay one
school in baseball or tennis. (For track and
field results, please see page 12).
In baseball, Albany State won three
straight games to capture that title, while"
Morehouse ruled supreme in men's tennis
Savannah State emerged victorious in
women's tennis.
Here's' a recap of the action in each
sport.
BASEBALL
In the championship finals, Albany
. State and Paine College battled on even
terms. But in the end, the Rams prevailed
6-4 to secure the tournament title.
Both teams took turns gaining the
upper hand. Going into the bottom of the
eighth inning, the game was deadlocked at
4-4.
Eric Price, voted as the tourney's out
standing hitter, led the Rams attack. He hit
a home run, batted .750 and drove in four
runs in the finals. Marcus Hudson added
another homer for Albany State.
Aside from Price's bat, the difference
in this game was the Rams ability to score
runs when they had men on base. ASC left
five on base. Paine, on the other hand, left
10 men stranded.
Dexter Malone (tourney's outstanding
pitcher) was the winning pitcher. Malone
. came on in relief of starter Mike Terry in
the sixth inning and held PC scoreless. In
five innings, Terry recorded four strikeouts
and issued one walk.
Rodney Corley carried the hot bat for
the Lions. He was three for four at the plate
and had two RBIs. Marlon Cobbs, who
hung tough for the whole game, was the
losing pitcher.
Albany started the tournament with a
11-4 win over Savannah State. The Rams
_ earned their shot at the championship by
beating Paine, 5-3 in the second round of
the tournament
PCs road to the finals wasn't smoothly
paved. After their first loss to Albany, they
.came back to topple Savannah State, 8-4 in
the semi-finals.
The Lions pulled this one out in their
half of the seventh inning with a four run
explosion to put the game away. Brian
Brown, tournament MVP, provided his
share of offense with two, extra-base hits (a
double and a triple) to drive in two runs.
Cobb was also busy at the plate and on the
base paths. For the game, he went two for
three and had three stolen bases.
Kelvin Knight was the winning pitch
er. Jacque Walker was charged with the
loss.
The first game between Albany and
Paine turned out to be a preview of the
finals.
PC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first
inning, but the Rams retaliated by scoring
four runs over the next three innings to take
a 4-2 advantage.
Stephen Lindsey kept the Lions under
control with a masterful mound effort for
the Rams. Lindsey pitched five innings,
allowed six hits, but fanned seven batters
MEN'S TENNIS
