Literacy initiative m holds kick-off event -Robin Mahan Baker Robin Baker graduates Robin Mahan Baker, the daughter of Mrs. Thelma Mahan and the late Sherman Mahan, is among 37 graduates of the Physi cian Assistant Class of Duke Uni versity Medical School. She will practice family medicine or gyne cology. Baker received her degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1987. The Literacy Initiative, a part nership of educators, civic groups, businesses, and individuals, held a luncheon in Winston-Salem on June 13 to increase awareness about the literacy crisis and to recognize peo ple who have promoted adult litera cy. Dr. David G. Brown, a provost of Wake Forest University, addressed the more than 250 partici pants. Statistics about illiteracy should send shivers down the spines of corporations in this country," Brown said. He suggested that employers offer incentives like giv ing workers time off to participate in adult educational programs. "Learners are the real champi ons- those who step forward and say " I want to learn." Seven awards were presented at the luncheon. Dovie Preston, age 70, received the student achieve ment award. Earline Parmon accept ed the agency achievement award for LIFT (Learning Is Fun, Too). Ann Gehlen, President of the Forsyth Literacy Council, received the leadership award. Frank Dessell and Bess Hollingsworth received community service awards for their work as lit eracy volunteers. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and Sara Lee Corporation received awards for their sponsorship of literacy pro grams. ? The Literacy Initiative was - formed by the United Way's Com munity Problem-Solving Commit tee and the critical issues committee of Leadership Winston -Salem. Jim Ferrell is chairman of the initiative's advisory board, and Sandra Pen nington serves as executive director. Local opportunities for learners are found at Forsyth Technical Community College, through the Forsyth Literacy Council, and the Pilot Mountain Baptist Association, both of which match tutors with individual learners or small groups. Dr. John Schroeder, principal of Fairview Elementary School in High Point, was named 1991 North Carolina Wachovia Princi pal of the Year. Schroeder received the award from L.M. Baker Jr., chief execu tive officer of Wachovia Bank of North Carolina, and Bob Etheridge, North Carolina Super intendent of Public Instruction. Wachovia and the Department of Public Instruction have co-spon sored the awards "program since 1984. Schroeder began his career in education in 1968 as a teacher in Asheville. In 1983 he was named principal of Fairview, the oldest and largest elementary school in the High Point system. Fairview's students come from the surround ing neighborhood of predominant '91 Wachovia Principal of the Year ly minority and lower income fam ilies. Schroeder has been an advo cate for his students to ensure that they are given the same education al opportunities as students attend ing other elementary schools. His doctoral dissertation on funding for the High Point schools resulted in changes in the way resources are allocated. Realizing that many students coming into kindergarten were already deficient in language skills, Schroeder designed and implemented an experience-based developmental program for 3- and 4-year-olds. Fairview is now a pilot site for the state's preschool program. The school was also a pilot site for IBM's "Write to Read" program and houses aip extensive computer lab. Dr. John M.
