The Tigers had a two-day total of 582 to secure the crown. But while JSU didn't emerge with an individual champion, they did place four golfers in the top 10 to pave the way to victory. South Carolina State finished seven strokes behind JSU with a 589 to finish sec ond. The Bulldogs have been tournament runners-up for the past three years. SC State won this tournament in '87 and '88. Rounding out the top five in this field was Florida A&M (611), St. Augustine's (620) and Fayetteville State (625). Individually, South Carolina State's Mar tin Roache displayed the winning touch, shooting a 36-hole, one-under par total of 141, a record for this five-year old event (For more on Roache, see BCSR centerfold). Roache, a junior, took command during the first round by firing a two-under 69. He shot 72 over the final 18 holes to win by one Stroke over second-place Leo Bennett of Florida A&M. Jackson State's Marcus Williams pro duced the Tigers' highest finish for medalist honors with a 143 for third place, "teammate Peter Korzilius followed Williams at 144 for the No. 4 spot, while Edward Halseil of SC State carded a 148 for fifth place. Next to Jackson State, South Carolina State had the next highest number of players to finish among the top 10. Aside from Roach and Halseil, the Bulldogs got solid play from Dwayne McKelvey who totaled 150 for eighth place in the low medalist competition. OToole was last year's low medalist winner. The Division I schools dominated indi vidual play this year. St. Augustine's Terrence Allen was the only Division II golfer to crack the top 10. He shot 150 which was good for - ninth place. Team-wise, not only did Jackson State and South Carolina State duel for the team trophy, but they also dominated the voting for the National Minority Golf Coaches Associa tion All-America team. Of the seven players selected, JSU had three players while SC State had two. Williams, O'Toole and Norwood were the selectees for JSU, while Roache and McKelvey made it for the Bulldogs. Williams, OToole and Norwood are repeaters from last year's squad. Other All-America picks are Chris Brown of St Augustine's and Cedric Smith of Hampton University.
