Offensively, the Hornets are . blessed with ample ammunition to Inflict much damage every Saturday. ASU averaged 440.9 total yards a game in *90, while displaying awe some balance in the process (220.6 ypg rushing, 220.3 ypg passing), QB Ricky Jones has arrived as one of SWAC's premier athletes (2,196 passing yards, 21 TDs and only 10 interceptions). He has some high powered mates to go to -- in the air Sftafron the ground. ? ? Wide-out "Downtown" Reggie ? averaged 17 ypc last season. Tailback Rico White delivered 936 rushing yards and a dozen scores en route to being named SWAC's Newcomer of the Year. Patrick Johnson, a 6-1, 265 lbs. center makes it all happen for the Hor nets when he works his magic in the trenches. Johnson is a three-time All SWAC selection. Jackson State ~ - History is on the side of this Tigers team. JSU has won five of the last six ? titles. But coach W.C. Gorden & Co. could find it very difficult to remain on top of the stack this year. Jackson always has the talent. But this season they are without some key contributors. QB Shawn Gregory, WR . Tim Barnett, punter Fred McCrae, and placekicker Ike Ayozie have completed their eligibility. Ditto for last year's starting defensive line. But JSU isn't in dire straights by any means. WR Jimmy Smith had 42 receptions for 894 yards and 9 TDs and TE Harold Heath had 574 receiv ing yards. While Smith and Heath are a pro ductive pair, they still need someone to get the ball to them. Going into pre season drills, it appears that Anthony Smith will get the call. Smith didn't get much playing time as Gregory's back up, so he's somewhat of a question mark at this point. However, Smith won't have to worry about throwing on every down, not with RB James Johnson coming back for another season. In *90, John son was a workhorse, rushing for 871 ypg and 12 TDs. Up front, the Tigers figure to be solid thanks to a couple of all-league beef people in Dietrich Lockridge (6-3, 310) and Reginald Davidson (6-3, 290). Defensively, the front line will be have finished their college careers. Yet, there are suitable replacements ready to step in and fill that void. Patrick Parker (6-11, 340), Anthony Palmer (6-4, 280) and PheArthur Edwards (6-2, 268) are JSU's Lords of Bulk.
