ing candidate to take over at quarterback. Jones' stock rose last year when he directed the Hornets to victory over rival Howard Univer siy in the final game of the regular season. Whie the offense is a known commodty, the defense has a lot of questions to be answered if this team is to challenge for the league title. Most of the defensive linemen and linebackers have finished their colege careers. Jason Whitfield has the potential to be a top figft defensive end and A|ahonso Tyler has the tools to be one of the besF linebackers in the league.- 1 ?? . - ? ? The defensive backfield is in good hands ^with4he~fletum of rovefman James Redding r*- and safetyman Brian Randall South Carolina State Is there a quarterback in the house? That's the question that coach Willie Jeffries has been asking. And why not? Last year, the Bulldogs started four different people at the QB slot With that many changes, ifs hard to develop any kind of offensive continuity. ? Marvin Marshall oould be the one who gets the starting cal when the season opens. Marshall was redshirted last year. But by the time spring drills ended, he had established himseff asthe starter, in place of Robert Hemby who started five games last season. The running game will be minus John Biown, a tough, inside runner who has com pleted his college ettgbity. But Antonio Mackey is eager and ready to go. Mackey gives the 4 Dogs a legitimate "go all the way from any where on the fiekr type of threat Mackey 'was - absent in '90 because of a knee injury. As a rookie two years ago, Mackey shared the spot light with Brown and rushed for 582 yards, aver aging almost five yards a carry. On the defensive side of the line, the sec ondary is the strong suit. Safetyman Ricky Hll is the undisputed leader. Last year, he made four All-American teams and had nine interceptions to tie for first-place in the MEAC stats. Vernon Grier compliments Hill as one of the league's top-rated comerbacks. Still, the Dogs wil need consistent play on the line and at linebacker if they are to upset the MEAC's pecking order. Gregory Henderson and Robert Porcher will be counted on to make life miserable for opposing quarterbacks, whie Sean Phillips has a shot to make a name for himself at inebacker. Howard University Little or no benchpower can be a team's own undoing. Don't think so? Just ask Bison coach Steve Wilson, who witnessed a rash of injuries attack his team and knock them out of contention for conference honors. At mid-season last year, Howard was rid ing the crest of an ocean wave at 5-0. But after that, I was al down hi and the Bison finished up at 6-5. Get the picture? Offensively, Howard is stocked with reli able personnel. Donald Carr is a seasoned quarterback who can count on productive rush ing numbers from J.J. Carpenter and Ryan Heathoock. " *1 ^WherrlHowarif goes to the air, Carr has Mfce Caswell George Humes and Gary Harrei to goto. HarreN can also cause problems as an aoe punt returner artist In *90, he was one of the nation's best, averaging 16.4 yards per return. The offensive line should be sofid as long as Paul Ramseur, Robert Carpenter and Nigel Greene stay healthy. At the defensive end, the Bison have two of the league's top performers in linebacker Kenny Newsome and DBs Tim Watson and Water Prioe. The outlook for the defensive line is unclear going into the season. HU wi have to have sofid performances from Ransom Miler, Ronald Smith and Todd Wight to stay in con tention. BethuneCookman Weloome to the pich and calch shew fea turing QB Jermaine Hal and wide receiver Jeff Parker. Last year, these two put on individual displays that left fans and opposing coaches gasping for air. Hal threw for 2,206 yards and 11 IDs and Parker latched onto 58 aerials for 937 yards and 6 touchdowns. B-CC has such a reputation for throwing the bal, that the tendency of opposing defenses is to overlook the run. Donnie Hogan is very able as a rusher. But he'l certainly get even bet ter with the help of linemen Keith Griffin, John Cutter and Edmund Lewis. The defense has some major question marks. Safety Evan Toney is a top-flight defend Please see Page 15 Game dates and opponents are subject to change. Check the respective schools for schedule changes.
