port from their linebacker positions.
^n offense, all-league tackle Charles
Stuckey, along with Reinard McGruder
are key returnees who will pave the way
for fullback Jerold Dalton, while Bernard
Hitson Dennis Davis and Jerold Boyd will
fight it out for playing time at the tailback
8101.
Rondal Griffin is the incumbent at
quarterback. However, he is likeiy get a
stiff challenge from sophomores Tyrone
Morgan and Keith Jones.
Clark/Atlanta University
A 4-6 season isn't considered very
good. But when your program hasnt won ?
more than three games in many moons,
it's not so bad at all. That's the story for
coacf^Willie Hunter's Panthers, who
putted off a few surprises in *90.
But Hunter, who was one of Atlanta's
winningest prep coaches before he
joined the Panthers, could be hard
pressed to reach the .500 mark this sea
son. For starters, three key performers
are missing. Offensively, quarterback
Marlow Roberson and all-purpose star
Millard Hamilton accounted for over 3,000
yards and 27 TDs last year. Defensively,
? noseman Richard Sibert was the soul of
that unit as one of the SIAC's leading hit
men.
If replacements can be found for
those three, Clark/Atlanta will be on track
to continue its trek back to the upper ech
elon of the league.
Center Tommy Buckson (6-1, 279) is
the top returning offensive player. Wide
receiver Felix Lewis (38 catches, 470
yards) should be more of a force in *91
now lhat Hamilton is gone.
The QB position is likely to be taken
over by JUCO transfer Charles Parks, a
crafty runner, who impressed Hunter in
workouts. Jackie Smith could also vie for
playing time before the season is over.
On defense, the hub is the sec
ondary, led by four sophomores who saw
plenty of action as rookies last season.
Cornerback Kareem Bacon, was all
league in '90 and is the best of the bunch.
But Schredrick Austin, Jamie Freeman
and Micheat Neal and Terry Beckham are
all very reliable performers.
Morehouse College
First-year coach Craig Cason is
going to have his hands full in trying to
keep the Maroon Tigers afloat this sea
son. But he does have a few gems
among the group who wilt be looked to for
leadership.
Patrick Gamble returns as M-House's
top rushing threat and David Boone is a
stand-out at wide receiver. On defense,
? free safety Jason Bryant Is the prime per
former in the secondary and Carleton
' Moore anchors the linebacking corps.
Miles College
From a mental standpoint, the Bears
have no option other than to be optimistic
after winning just one of 10 games last
year. MC has a new coach in Edward
Colvin, whose major goat is to re-estab
lish a winning frame of mind.
More than a few slots are up for
grabs as the season approaches. On
offense, Derrick Brown and Ernest Kelly
battle for the QB job, while Marcus Lomax
and Paul Caldwell duel for the the starting
running back job. Dwight Christian is the
top returnee at tight end.
Defensively, oornermen Roger Ches
tang and Jerome Jones are the top per
formers.
