The second annual Gover nor's Open Golf Tournament is scheduled for Sept. 21 at the Win ston Lake Golf Course. North Car olina Governor James Martin will be on hand for the festivities. The format for this year's tournament is team play, captain's choice. The tourney begins at 9 : a.m. with a shotgun start, with . play limited to the first 120 players rdfo reg'Ster iniiir* -a Registration fee for this tour -nament is $80 per person or $320 per team. The fee covers the cost for green fees, cart fees, the pair ing party and picnic. The Governor's Open is sponsored by the East Area Council of the Greater Winston Salem Chamber of Commerce. Proceeds from the tournament will be used to provide scholarship funds for students at Winston Salem State University. Aside from a round of golf, the tournament also offers several Cavaliers vs. Magic in Winston Tickets are now on sale for NBA pre-season action in Winston Salem. The Cleveland Cavaliers will play the Orlando Magic on Oct. 18, 7:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum. This exhibition matchup will feature its share of former ACC stars. The Cavs will feature Chucky Brown (North Carolina State), Danny Ferry (Duke), Brad Daugherty (North Carolina), Mark Price (Georgia Tech) and Larry Nance (Clemson). Orlando's former ACCers are sharp shooting Dennis Scott (Georgia Tech) and rookie Chris Corchiani (North Carolina State). Aside from the ACC players, other top performers include John "Hot Rod" Williams of Cleveland and Orlando's Scott Skiles, the NBA record holder for most assists in a single game. Hornets vs. Nets in Greensboro The NBA comes to Greensboro this fall when the Charlotte Hornets face the New Jersey Nets in a pre-season game on Oct. 12 at the Greensboro Coliseum. Tip-off time is set for 7:35 p.m. Both the Hornets and the Nets continue to build for the future. Nev ertheless, fans are in for a treat since the two teams have signed two of the elite players from the college ranks. For Charlotte, Larry Johnson, the College Player of the Year from Nevada-Las Vegas, was the top pick in the *91 NBA Draft last June. Johnson is expected to hefp^the^Homets^tX3tster1hetrtnstde^ame at both ends of the floor. In addition, Charlotte has all-purpose guard Kendall Gill who made the NBA's all-rookie team last season. And there's always the ever-exciting Muggsey Bogues, the former Wake Forest star who ranks among the league's most proficient point guards. The Nets have their share of prized young talent. For starters, they have Derrick Coleman, formerly of Syracuse who was voted NBA Rook ' ie of the Year for the '90-'91 season. This year, Coleman has more help with the addition of flashy point guard Kenny Anderson who left Georgia Tech after his sophomore season to turn pro.
