Emmanuel celebrates pastor's 8th anniversary On Sunday, October 13, Emmanuel Baptist Church of Shalimar Drive, will honor and celebrate the eighth anniversary of Dr. John Mendez as its pastor/ The preacher for the occa sion during the 11 a.m. worship service will be the Rev. Earl Brown, pastor of Fifth Street Baptist Church, Richmond, Va. Following, there will be a special dinner given in Dr. Mendez's honor at 4 p.m. and the congregation of St. Stephen's Baptist Church will be our guests. At 7 p.m., Zion Memorial Baptist Church and its pastor, the Rev. Joseph Jones, will ren der service. Since coming to Emmanuel, Dr. Mendez's preaching, social and prophetic ministries have enlightened and sensitized us to both international, national, and local issues which has helped us to fulfiH our mission as a church. He has truly been a world wide outreach minister. Many ministries for the young and elderly have been initiated under his leadership. The most recent is, the Kemet School of Knowledge, a Saturday ethnic school designed to meet the needs of "miseduca tion" of African-American youth by the public school system. In May of 1991, Dr. Mendex w as honoredbyfci^Alma Mater, Shaw University by the receiv ing of an honorary doctorate degree. As one who has been influ enced by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Howard Thurman, and W. E. B. DuBois, we all have been blessed through his leadership to connect spiritually with social responsibilities as Jesus did in Luke 4:16.
