Thomas' fate hangs on hearings Text Of Thomas' Affidavit WASHINGTON (AP) -Here is the text of Clarence Thomas' signed affidavit about allegations he sexually harassed a former assis tant: "As I told the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Sept. 28, 1991 , I totally and unequivocally deny Anita Hill's allegations of miscon duct of any kind toward her, sexual or otherwise. These allegations are untrue." "At all times during the period sh? worked with me, our relation ship was strictly professional. During that time and subsequently, the relationship has been wholl/ cordial/ "1 am terribly saddened and deeply offended by these allega tions/ vidual arc relevant." He stressed that he was unaware of any other allegations I of sexual harassment against Thomas. Thomas' chances for confir mation in a scheduled Tuesday evening vote evaporated in the face of concern over the allega tions by Anita Hill, a University of Oklahoma law professor. Hill has alleged that after she refused his request for a date, Thomas made sexually inappro priate comments, including descriptions of pornographic movies, when they worked Thomas phone logs prove key . WASHINGTON (AP) ? In controversies ranging from Iran _ Contra to professional baseball, telephone logs have played a key. role as evidence. Phone logs surfaced Tuesday as the Senate debated allegations of sexual harassment leveled at Clarencc Thomas, President Bush's nominee for the Supreme Court Sen. John Danforth, R-Mo., released telephone logs^he said showed that Anita Hill, a former aide to Thomas at the Education Department and the Equal Employ ment Opportunity Commission, contacted Thomas 1 1 times between January 1984 and November 1990. Danforth, Thomas' chief Senate backer, characterized the calls as inconsistent with the conduct of someone who had been sexually harassed. Ms. Hill, a graduate of Yale Law School, has been a law profes sor at the University of .Oklahoma since 1986. Prior to that she worked at Oral Roberts University's law school and for Thomas in Washing ton. During the Iran-Contra affair, congressional investigating commit tees wrangled with the Justice Department to obtain calendars and phone logs related to the arms-for hostages scandal. The material sought included logs by former attorney general Edwin Meese III that noted phone contacts with former CIA director William Casey, ex-FBI director William Webster and Texas billion aire H. Ross Perot. More recently, in the wake of the Pete Rose gambling scandal, baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent last year ordered every professional team to keep track of calls in and out of the clubhouse. A Senate report released this summer said phone logs of David Paul, the ousted chairman of the failed CenTrust Savings Bank of Miami, showed at least 120 contacts with elected officials and their staff members. In the federal bureaucracy, many high-level officials voluntari ly keep records of their phone con tacts, said Richard McGowan, a spokesman for the government's . Office of Personnel Management. The practice also occurs com monly in private industry - although at least one office-efficien cy expert considers it a waste of time. "I think it implies mistrust," said Barbara Hemphill, a private efficiency consultant based. in Washington. "We need to get on with what's important to do." The phone logs released Tues day by Danforth include what appeared to be an exchange of missed calls in ofte case. The earli est included the noted message, "Just called to say hello. Sorry she didn't get to see you last week." Other messages noted in Thomas' logs indicated she was seeking "advice in getting research grants," and in August 1987, ^want ed to congratulate you on mar riage." From the logs, it was impos sible to determine details of any of Thomas' responses to the calls. Sometimes the worst thing about having a disability is that people meet it before they meet you. HWhat concerns me as much as the allegations themselves is the U.S. Senate appears not to take the charge of sexual harass ment seriously/' said Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., one of the Sen ate's two women members. A group of outraged women members of the House tried to barge in on a private meeting of Senate Democrats to vent their anger. ? They settled ToFa meeting with Mitchell. "Nothing has been said about the nominee, but plenty has been said about the woman, which is typical," complained Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y.
