Tanner honored by family, friends at retirement dinner A retirement dinner was held for John L. Tanner Sr., an original member of The Five Royales, Sat urday, Nov. 23 at Steak & Ale Restaurant. Hosts for the evening were Tanner's wife, Cornelia, John and Margretta S. Tanner, Calvin Tanner, Denise Tanner Hughes, and Willard and Lizzie Ibnner. Keynote speakers for the din ner were Purnell Tanner, Dr. Freder ick D. Tanner and Alderman Larry Womble. Tanner retired from Centenary Methodist Church on Nov. 27, 1991, Thanksgiving Day and his birthday. ?> During the dinner, Purnell Tan ner and Dr. Frederick Tanner told of the childhood days with their broth er John, and how they would sing at home, often along with their two - other brothers, David Tanner and Eugene Tanner, who also later joined The Five Royales Group. Alderman Larry Womble gave a synopsis of Tanner and the recognition that the City of Win ston-Salem has given The Five Royales. The Five Royales originally started out as the Royal Sons and toured the Carolinas and Virginia in the late 1940s. Their first style was gospel and the group later crossed over to rhythm and blues in 1952. It was that year that The Royal Sons . became The Five Royales at the John Tanner Sr., an original member of The Five Royales, was hon ored last weekend at a retirement dinner hosted by his family and friends. She Is currently a junior enrolled In the Center for Engineering and Technology Magnet Program at Frsd$flek Douglas High School. She Is a member of the marching band, the junior council, treasurer of Emminence (her social club), a member of Ben Hill United Methodist Church and Youth Choir and id enjoying her third year employed at Six Flags Over Georgia. Karyn plans to Study computer science at either Speiman College or North Carolina A&T Universi ty. Another of the original songs by the group was "Dedicated to the One 1 Love.M It was re-recorded in 1958 by the Shirelles and the Mamas and Papas. Other groups who shared dates included The Impressions, The Clovers, Gladys Knight, Brook Benton, Bobby Blue Bland, Sam Cook, Fats Domino, Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. Other songs by The Five Royales include "Baby Take All of Me," "Help Me Somebody," "Crazy, Crazy, Crazy," "Cry Some More," and others. All together, the group produced, published and sung over 100 songs. ~ Jack Taylor Doggeu and Alder man Womble were instrumental in the recognition awarded to The Five Royales. A service was held at the Stevens Center and plaques were presented to the remaining Five Royales and the family members of the deceased members. Those plaques were presented by Alderman Womble, Mayor Martha Wood and Jack Taylor Doggett. Mayor Wood also pro claimed Friday, March 29, 1991 as Five Royales Day.
