Roundball '91: CIAA South
... t
In looking at the early part of
this season, there are signs that the
CIAA Southern Division will be
true smoker when conference and
division play starts in earnest next
month.
Shaw University (6-1) and
Johnson C. Smith (4-2) are posi
tioned where most people thought
they would be at this juncture ? at
or near the top of the standings. But
the major surprise is Fayetteville
State, a team that was still undefeat
ed at presstime (8-0).
The Broncos have made a
quantam leap because of their
rebounding. In eight games, they've
outboarded the opposition by 9.9
caroms a game. Vernon Broughton,
a newcomer, is quickly making a
name for himself as a prime-time
forward (22.1 ppg, 9.7 ipg), 62.1 PG
%). Travis Spells supplies ample
assistance on the boards at 9.2 rpg
and he's a dead-eye shooter (63.2
FG%).
Point guard Emmanual Cal
loway is having an exceptional early
season with 8.3 assists and 2.9 steals
per contest. Chris Waters provides
solid defense around the basket His
2.3 blocked shots a game average,
ranks him among the league leaders.
Shaw University is up to its old
tricks. The Bears never tire of
putting the ball through the hoop
(96.4 ppg). Sheldon Owens, last
year's CIAA Player of the Year is
going full throttle as the loop's top
gun (28.3 ppg). Iferrance McCoy
(19.9 ppg) has a long-distance

shooting eye that keeps defenses
stretched out, which is a big phis for
power player Curtis Reed (16.4 ppg,
13.6 rpg).
Early on, the Bears are burning
all foes with the three-point shot.
Antwon Newkirk (72.7 percent),
Greg -Boyd (65.2 percent) and
McCoy (48.2 percent) are all ranked
among the CIAA's top five in field
goal percentage from three-point
range.
Ronald Field (averages 2.0
blocked shots) gives SU a defensive
presence around the basket
Johnson C. Smith has the worst
record of the south's top three
teams. But it's no big deal for now.
Mark Sherrill and Columbus Parker
continue to demonstrate why they
are the league's top scoring tandem.
Sherrill scores 27.8 ppg and Parker
tallies 21.3 ppg.
Inside, however, is where the
Golden Bulls are more improved.
Kevin Reid (62.8 PG %) and Robert
Boykins (65.9 FG%) have made life
a bit easier for Sherrill and Parker,
which should pay off more and
more as the season progresses.
Reggie Torrance adds stability
at point guard. He's averaging 5.3
assists per game.
