* Roundball '91: CIAA South ... t In looking at the early part of this season, there are signs that the CIAA Southern Division will be true smoker when conference and division play starts in earnest next month. Shaw University (6-1) and Johnson C. Smith (4-2) are posi tioned where most people thought they would be at this juncture ? at or near the top of the standings. But the major surprise is Fayetteville State, a team that was still undefeat ed at presstime (8-0). The Broncos have made a quantam leap because of their rebounding. In eight games, they've outboarded the opposition by 9.9 caroms a game. Vernon Broughton, a newcomer, is quickly making a name for himself as a prime-time forward (22.1 ppg, 9.7 ipg), 62.1 PG %). Travis Spells supplies ample assistance on the boards at 9.2 rpg and he's a dead-eye shooter (63.2 FG%). Point guard Emmanual Cal loway is having an exceptional early season with 8.3 assists and 2.9 steals per contest. Chris Waters provides solid defense around the basket His 2.3 blocked shots a game average, ranks him among the league leaders. Shaw University is up to its old tricks. The Bears never tire of putting the ball through the hoop (96.4 ppg). Sheldon Owens, last year's CIAA Player of the Year is going full throttle as the loop's top gun (28.3 ppg). Iferrance McCoy (19.9 ppg) has a long-distance ME AC Hoops In men's basketball, South Carolina State's Jackie Robinson has been named MEAC Player of the Week after averaging 21.3 points and 11 rebounds a game for three games. The 6-9 junior forward ^ was also named to the All Tournament team in the *Run nin' Joe Classic at Arkansas State Coppin State's Keith Carmichael, a 6-2 freshman guard, earned Rookie of the Week honors by scoring 12 points and pulling down six rebounds in Coppin's 84-74 win over Maryland-Baltimore Counly. Other top perfor mances were turned in by Tariq Saunders of Coppin State and rookie Bernard Toat ?% ley of South Carolina State. Saunders had 28 points and 15 boards vs. Maryland-Balti more County. Toatley had 22 points and five rebounds at the Joe Classic. In women's play, Wanda Wiggins of South Car olina State shined as the con ferece Player of the Week in leading her team to, victories over Clark/Atlanta University (78-37) and East Carolina (66 55). In those two games, the 5 8 sophomore guard Jiad 29 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and five assists Howard University's Dorothy Hunter turned in impressive perfor mances even in defeat The 5 8 guard recorded 33 points, 12 rebounds, nine steals and eight ' assists in losses to American University (74-67) and George -Mason (64-58). Other notable games were turned in by Howard's Annette Lee and Roslyn Evans. Lee had 33 points and 14 rebounds in two games. Evans finished with 25 points . and eight boards in those con tests. Coppin's LaShawn Scott was named to the all-tourna ment team at the Marshall University Tournament, total ing 29^Wnts and 14 assists. In Delaware State's 81-71 loss to Delaware State, Shervon Hunter scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds. shooting eye that keeps defenses stretched out, which is a big phis for power player Curtis Reed (16.4 ppg, 13.6 rpg). Early on, the Bears are burning all foes with the three-point shot. Antwon Newkirk (72.7 percent), Greg -Boyd (65.2 percent) and McCoy (48.2 percent) are all ranked among the CIAA's top five in field goal percentage from three-point range. Ronald Field (averages 2.0 blocked shots) gives SU a defensive presence around the basket Johnson C. Smith has the worst record of the south's top three teams. But it's no big deal for now. Mark Sherrill and Columbus Parker continue to demonstrate why they are the league's top scoring tandem. Sherrill scores 27.8 ppg and Parker tallies 21.3 ppg. Inside, however, is where the Golden Bulls are more improved. Kevin Reid (62.8 PG %) and Robert Boykins (65.9 FG%) have made life a bit easier for Sherrill and Parker, which should pay off more and more as the season progresses.
