Spirits' new
owner discusses
future plans
Larry Schmittou, the new
owner of the Winston-Salem
Spirits baseball team discussed
his plans for the club in a Monday
afternoon press conference.
Accompanied by Carolina
League President John Hopkins
and Spirts General Manager John
Rocco, Schmittou expressed how
happy he is to own the Spirits
franchise.
Tm very excited that we are
here," he said. "I owned the
Greensboro Hornets for nine
years and I realize that this area is
a good market for minor league
baseball."
Schmittou's plans for the Win
ston market will focus on catering
to the family, which is the same
approach he uses with two other
minor league teams - the Class
AA Huntsville (Ala.) club and the
Class AAA Nashville (Tenn.)
team. The first order of business
for the new owner is improving
the line-up of promotions and
beefing up the efforts in stadium
renovations.
"With the expansion, improve
ments are to be done by 1993," he
said. "We are not concerned about
the money it will take to complete
the process, but rather the time.
We will put in new concession
stands, new souvernir stands,
expand to close to 7,000 seats,
improve the parking area, as well
as add a new home clubhouse."
The renovations will reported
ly cost around $1 million.
