WSSU Board of Visitors hold meeting
"America 2000" was the theme
of the December 12-13 meeting of
the Winston-Salem State University
Board of Visitors.
Dr. Lelia Vickers, director of
the division of education, presented
the National Goals for Education
proposed by the Bush administra
tion to the 25-member board of
community and business leaders
who meet twice yearly to advise
university officials.
The national goals call for all
children to start .school ready to
learn, the high school graduation
rate will increase to 90 percent, stu
dents in grades four, eight and 12
will demonstrate competency in
such areas as mathematics, English,
science, history and geography,
American students will be the first
in the world in science and mathe
matics achievements, all adult
Americans will be literate, and
every school will be free of drugs
and violence.
Among the participants were
education majors and Vincent Park-,
er, principal of Clemmons Elemen
tary School.
"Our schools are a mirror of
our society and to meet the goals set
for education, changes must occur
in our society," Parker said. "In
order to accomplish this goal,
changes must occur in our society
Judge Biggs to seek
re-election in 1992
Judge Loretta Copland Biggs
Loretta Copeland Biggs,
Forsyth County District Court
Judge, is pleased to announce that
she will be seeking re-election to
retain her seat in 1992. Judge Biggs,
age 37, was appointed to the Dis
trict Court bench in February 1987,
and was elected to maintain that
seat in 1988.
Prior to her appointment and
subsequent election, Judge Biggs
served as an Assistant District
Attorney in Forsyth County from
1984 to 1987. In addition, she
served as staff counsel with the
Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta,
Georgia from 1979 to 1982. Judge
Biggs currently serves on the Board
of Law Visitors at Wake Forest
School of Law, and has been
appointed to a number of commit
tees by Chief Justice Exum of the
North Carolina Supreme Court.
Judge Biggs has participated in
Leadership Winston-Salem; served
as Chairperson of the Review and
Comment Committee of the Juve
nile Justice Council; on the Board
of Directors of Big Brothers/Sisters,
Forsyth County Volunteers, and the
Legal Aide Society; and on the
Youth Advisory Committee of the
Human Relations Commission.
Judge Biggs is married to Larry
Biggs, a vice president at Wachovia
Bank and Trust Company, who is
manager of the Corporate Leasing
Division. She is mother to two chil
dren, daughter Jahmela, age 8, and
son Jelani, age 6.
