Black College Sports Review DIVISION II B'BALL: CIAA In the Northern Division, the battle will be waged by Virginia Union and Hampton University, last year's confer ence tournament victor. However, Nor folk State. Virginia State and St. Paul's all have a solid shot at making strong runs for the title. The Southern Division isn't lacking competition either. Johnson C. Smith looms as the favorite. But the Golden Bulls will have their hands full trying to hold off Shaw University and a vastly improved Fayetteville State team. Win , ston-Salem State is the darkhorse pick. NORTHERN DIVISION Virginia Union With four rookies and a transfer, the Panthers got as far as the national semi finals last March. That's the reason they are picked to win the national champi onship and the CIAA in *92. Walter Hurd (15.6 ppg) and Warren Peebles form a very able backcourt. The presence of Reggie Jones, Troy Phillips and Derek Johnson gives Union a very formidable front line, perhaps the best in the league. Coach Dave Robbins' team should reach greater heights this time around thanks to the infusion of some proven tal ent in the low post Robert McKie, 6-7, 255, will get his share of minutes and so will 6-8, 260 pound Tim Davis. McKie was Auburn's starting center last year. Davis finished the season as one of the nation's top JUCO players. When you put that all together, it makes Union a solid choice to rule the roost Hampton University Solid defense and stellar outside shooting will keep coach Zeke Avery's Pirates in contention. But things will be a bit slow at the outset because two of HLTs all-league performers missed the first half of the season because of grades. It's no sweat though. Marvin Childs, a 6-11 center, and Keith Hunter, a 6-9 power forward, will return to action in mid-December. Childs (13.3 ppg, 11 rpg) is a monster around the glass, particularly on defense, averaging 3.3 blocked shots per game. Hampton's perimeter game is in good hands with Kenny Brown, the CI A A Tournament MVP last February/ Brown scored at a 17.2 ppg clip, primarily from long distance. Weldon Parham handles the point guard slot Newcomers to watch include Jo Jo Chambers, Kevin Gregory and Leon Robertson. Norfolk State Coach Michael Bernard begins a new era at NSU after enjoying a successful stint at North Carolina Central. The Spartans figure to showcase a number tof ttew faces this season. Fred Benjamin and Larry McCloud, a couple of 7-footers,. head the list. JUCO All American forward Brian Woodard will also contribute. In the backcourt, Dave Donerlson and Marcus Whitfield are gifted shooters who will provide NSU with offensive Si CI A A - Predicted Order of Finish Northern Division 1. Virginia Union 2. Hampton University 3. Norfolk State 4. Virginia State 5. St Paurs College 6. Bowie State 7. Elizabeth City State Southern Division 1. Johnson C. Smith 2. Shaw University 3. Fayettevtlte State 4. Wmston-Satem State 5. North Carolina Central 6. St. Augustine's 7. Livingstone Coilege balance. Jacob Edwards and and Daryl Paul could wind up sharing the point guard duties. Virginia State The Trojans won't be pushovers by any means - not with Charles Jefferson and Tonaine Sears returning. Jefferson scored 13.4 ppg last season and is one of the league's top forwards. Sears was the team's leading scorer at 16.2 ppg before being sidelined after 12 games because of an eye injury. Inside, Rahn Dade and Ed Wilkerson are the prime performers. Kevin Hollo man provides bench strength at forward. Gerald Britt will run the show from his point guard spot. * St. Paul's College The Tigers are ready to break loose and inflict some damage. Coach Harry Bradley has a number of seasoned vets returning, a luxury that he hasn't had for the last four years. Tim King (16.1 ppg) and Darrell Townes are the mainstays. Newcomers Ameer Aziz, Ken Lawson and Will Montgomery are expected to help SPC levitate to a higher plane this season. Bowie State The Bulldogs don't gel a lot of respect when it comes to roundball. But coach Tyrone Hart figures he needs to change that train of thought this year. Aquila Matthews is the prime guy at 14.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg. Chuck Gholston is expected to help bolster BSUs backcourt. Xavier Joyner could see a lot of action at point guard, while Marvin Gross is tabbed for heavy duty on the front line. SOUTHERN DIVISION Johnson C. Smith The scoring tandem of Mark Sherrill and Columbus Parker is a major reason why coach Stephen Joyner's Golden Bulls figure to repeat as division win ners. Photo by T-Lee Shsldon Owens' versatility Is a major factor In Shaw University's roundball succsss. Elizabeth City State The Vikings don't have much size or experience. So that means that coach Claudie Mackey will have to exercise patience while his 11 new players get acclimated to the league and to his way of doing things. John McNeil (14.2 ppg) and Nathan Higgs are very able. But they won't be able to carry the whole load by themselves. Sherrill, a forward, and Parker,a guard, accumulated some impressive numbers, collectively scoring close to 50 points a game. Those two may not have to assume all of the offensive load this, year if Kevin Reid, Joel Jordan and Tim Mitchell increase their output as expect ed.
