Adams Continued from page A1 some people think that it's impa tience. But it's not impatience, I'm just actior.-oriented. I like to see things done in a timely, orderly fashion, especially when it can be done." Adams, who will serve as chairman until June of this year, likes making a difference in the community. In 1990, she ran for the North Carolina State House of Rep resentatives against Pete Oldham, and was in a runoff position. But she decided not to call for a runoff. "I think that was part of des tiny," she said reflecting on her can didacy. "I don't think it was time yet, now that 1 look back. He's (God) getting me ready for some thing." It is God, she said, who gives her the strength to stay busy with the Housing Authority, the Urban League and the East Winston CDC, while maintaining her career at Stroh's. "He gives me~ that extra energy to go on," she said. "Even though I work 12, 13, s someumesT work 16 hour days, it tioesn i nrnucr. When I come in here and there's something that has to be done for the good of somebody else, I get extra strength, extra energy to go on." However, she admitted that at one time, she swore she would never get so busy that she would have to have an appointment book. She soon changed her attitude when she "found out that if you want to make things change and happen, you've got to get on some of these boards," she said. Several things that Adams would like to see happen in the community is the construction of more public housing in the form of single family homes with yards, and the renovation of old, unused build ings in the city. She would also like . for more young people who live in public housing to become involved in the political process and help make the decisions which will affect their own lives. In the end, Adams hopes that public housing residents will become more self sufficient. ( "l want to see some big success stories in housing," she said. "I want to see every kid knowing and believing that they can go to col lege, that they can be teachers and doctors and line managers, and own their own businesses. That's what I want t? see.* 1 00 men will cook for UNCF The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and the Winston Lake Family YMCA plan to co-sponsor an evening of fine dining, live enter tainment, and dancing to benefit the UNCF.
