Black Invitational art exhibition continues to promote biack artists Part II Now in its third year, the Annu al Black Invitational art exhibition continues to promote a greater awareness, understanding and appreciation of the visual arts and the contributions made by local African- American artists. One of the main purposes of this show is to highlight the works of African -American artists living and working in the Triad. The exhi bition has, in its first two years, established the fact that many black artists are producing quality works and not receiving the support they need or deserve. It further showed the need for this exhibit to continue to grow. In last week's articlc you were able to read about the first 6 of the 13 artists to be exhibited. Here are the remaining 7 artists. John T. Lee Exhibitions and Commissions : Mr. Lee's commissions include "i W^g^'ngton, p.C. and work for iiic National Roller Skating Rink in Washington and Alexandria Roller Rink in Alexandria, Va. Background: Born in Washing ton, D.C., John T. Lee attended Alexander Graham Bell High School and was a member of the class of 1969. Vocational studies included architectural drawing as well as structural and landscape dis play models. Mr. Lee attended Washington Technical Institute for design architecture and civil engi neering and was a member of the class of 1973. Mr. Lee presently works as a freelance calligrapher, graphic artist, master printer including work with offset and silkscreen reproductions as well as commercial photography and commercial building design. James McMillan Exhibitions and Commissions : James McMillan works have been exhibited in galleries around the world including the Raymond Dun can Gallerie in Paris, France, Smith sonian Institute and Corcoran Gal leries in Washington, D.C., the duction, Drama and Creative Writ Skowegan Art School Gresco Barn ing and Winston-Salem State Uni and the Witherspoon Gallery oh the versity in Visual Art Mrs. Wharton campus of the University of North Little has worked as an Art Illustra Arts Reach By REGGIE JOHNSON Carolina at Greensboro. His awards include the appointment as Eminent Scholar in Fine Arts, Visiting Pro fessor, with Virginia Stale Universi ty in Petersburg, Virginia. Background : James McMillan earned a MFA from Catholic Uni versity in Washington, D.C. and attended the Skowegan School of Art in Maine, the Academie Julian in Paris, France, and Syracuse Uni versity in New York for continuing studies. Presently, Mr. McMillan is a professor of art at Guilford Col ?' 5 Glenda Wharton-Llttle Exhibitions and Collections: Glenda Wharton-Little's exhibitions include shows with SECCA, Uni versity of Maryland, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Win ston-Salem State University, North Carolina School of the Arts, Kince Gallery in New York, New York as well as Columbia University, The Corcoran Museum and The Brook lyn Collector, Brooklyn, New York. Her awards include the Hanes Cor poration and Gordon Hanes Educa tional Grants and Scholarships Award 1978-80, First Place Region al: International Arts Festival, Lagos, Nigeria, and Second Place and Honorable Mention, The Arts Council, "Look to the Future." Background : Mrs. Wharton-Lit tle's background includes earning a MFA from Columbia University in Studio Art and Film Production, BFA from the Corcoran School of Art as well as work with the North Carolina School of the Performing Arts in Studio Art, Design and Pro tor at Winston-Salem State Univer sity and as an illustrator in Washing ton, D.C. and New York, New York. She has worked for the Hanes Foun dation on "The Phoenix" ? an African mural. She has also edited, illustrated and co-authoied a chil dren's book and an African tale brochure for the opening of the Diggs Gallery on the campus of Winston-Salem State University. His one man shows have includ ed exhibitions at Forsyth County Public Library, Winston-Salem State University, R.J. Reynolds High School, Optimal Education Center. Mr. Peck has also created murals for Franciscus Day Care Center of Winston-Salem and the Reynolds Health Center in Forsyth County. Background : James Peck presently works in commercial advertisement for local businesses and organizations including The Bird Connection, Hyatt House, Tee Shirts and Design, Zayre Depart ment Store, Katie B. Reunion, and Ts Fashion Shop. Marshall Sudderth Exhibitions and Collections : This is the second occasion Mar shall Sudderth Jr. has exhibited his work publicly. Mr. Sudderth made his debut in 1991 in the Second Annual Black Artist Invitational. V Background: Mr. Sudderth presently serves as president of The MarsTTalV Group, a full -service advertising agency. His life experi ence includes a four- year stint in the United States Marines and work as a student with Art Student League and Frank Reilly School of Art. Mr. ?Sudderth's work history also includes experience as an art direc tor, creative director and advertising director in some of the largest retail stores in America. Roland Watts Exhibitions and Commissions : Roland Watts works have been exhibited extensively in one man shows including shows at Langston University, A&T University, Appalachian Stale University, Salem College, High Point College, Wake Forest University, and the Gallery of Contemporary Art in Winston Salem. Group shows in which Mr. Watts has been involved include "The Second Annual Black Artists Invitational" in 1991, "Afro- Ameri can Artists," Greensboro College,^ "Afro-American Artists.* North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh and the "46th Annual Drawing, Pho tography and Printmaking Show, SECCA. Background : Mr. Watts received a MFA from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and participated in further studies at A&T State University. Presently, Mr. Watts is the Chairman of the Fine Arts Department at Winston Salem University and serves on the Board of Directors of Piedmont Craftsmen, Inc. Gilbert Young Exhibitions and Commissions: Gilbert Young works have been exhibited throughout North and South Carolina. His works have been included in shows with Win ston-Salem State University, Dis tinctive Framing and Fine Art in Greenville, Art Expo, Greensboro Artist League, the McCree Theatre, William Monroe Trotter House, Green Hill Art Gallery and the Spring Hill Art Show in South Car olina. Background: Gilbert Young attended the Noith Carolina School of the Arts and studied design and production. Mr. Young furthered his studies at Salem College.
