By CRAIQ T. GREENLEF Chronicle Sports Editor If you're a boxer, 13 months is a long time to go without hav ing a fight. Sparring and condi tioning have their proper place, but there's nothing like a real deal ! scrap to give a fighter the chance to show his true mettle. That's been the story for Kent "The Exterminator" Hardee. However, this will all change on : Saturday when Hardee takes oh ! Jeff Whaley in a 10-round lightweight bout at thcy-Benton Convention Center for the North Carolina state championship belt. The Hardee/Whaley fight is the main event for the Saturday Night Fights, which will feature 10 fights that evening. The first bout is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Hardre, vwhos? record io 18 S 1, hasn't fought since last Febru ary when he registered a seventh round TKO over Jesse Williams on a bout telvised by the USA Network. Since thei^ the X-man had been scheduled to fight on Whit Lowery, Hardee's train er is confident that his guy will be ready to go on Saturday. The lack of competition, he said, will not be a factor. "Kent is a basic fight er," Lowery said. "He trains hard "If you haven't abused your body and you stay sharp mentally, you'll be OK." -Kent Hardee three occasions but none of the fights ever materialized. Hardee doesn't feel that his inactivity is a negative. "The lay off doesn't matter much," Hardee said. "It's just makes me more eager. I've been training hard. And besides, you do more when you train than you do in a fight. If you haven't abused your body and you stay sharp mentally, you'll be and he's looked good in sparring. I'm surprised at how sharp he is." Boxing notes Tickets are on sale at the Convention Center and the Lawrence Joel Memorial Colise um. Admission price is $10 a per son until 5 p.m. Saturday. After that, the price is $14 per person. VIP tables are $200 (to seat eight people). mm T ; ?' ?') iwY^fcar," i-t ?ii I 1 ' ' Lakers v\^in Martinsville tournament By Chronicle Staff ko win the Martinsville Invita llional Tournament last weekend Winston Lake's 13 and in Martinsville, Va.
