R&B show scheduled at coliseum By SANAANTHA McKENZIE Chronlde Staff Writer Assistant coliseum director Bucky Dame announced earlier this week he has booked a show geared to the African-American community. The contemporary gospel act, Bebe and Cece Winan is scheduled to appear at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in August, Dame said on Monday Bebe and Cece WinarTs act will be co-promoted with the city's set-aside fund. The fund was set up to help bring a variety of "at-risk" shows to the colise um, said coliseum director Mike Solomon. The last co-promoted show held at the coliseum geared to the African-American community was the theatrical production of TRACKS!, starring Yolanda King. Since the cancellation of songstress Natalie Cole in March and prior cancellations by rapper LL Cool J and singers Diana Ross and Smokey Robin son, all in 1990, the coliseum has been unsuccessful in book ing shows geared to African Americans. Dame said he is continuing talks concerning the Hammer '92 tour with A. H. Productions, a nationalpromoter that handles major R & B and rap touring acts. He also said additional meetings are being held with local promoters in an effort to produce a rap show in May or June. L.A. cops acquitted Continued from page A1 Wind, a probationary offi cer, was fired after the indict ments; the others were suspend ed. Gates and some other Los Angeles authorities feared that acquittals might spark unrest. Police had earmarked $1 million in overtime in case. Black leaders, who spent weeks appealing for calm, denounced -Gates' plan as inflammatory. The jury, which included no blacks, heard from 54 witnesses whose recollections of the vio lent night of March 3, 1991 often conflicted. Most of the testimony came from police officers and police employees, with three of the defendants testifying. But the most powerful evidence remained the videotape. On a large-screen TV that dominated the courtroom, attor neys played it again and again at varying speeds. Illuminated by the glare of police car headlights, it was a nightmare vision of a black man writhing under the baton blows of white police officers who clubbed and kicked him for 81 seconds. Prosecutors said they count ed 56 blows. King's leg and facial bones were broken. Kopn, the officer in charge that night. took the stand and calmly described the beating as "a man aged and controlled use of force." "It's violent and it's brutal," he said. "Sometimes police work is brutal. It's a fact of life." Powell, accused of striking the most blows, said he thought King was under the influence of PCP. No sign oC, the drug was , found in King's ^dyrsbut tests showed he was drunk. \ Farrakhan warns of conspiracy Continued from page A1 the M.C. Benton Convention Cen ter. " The Nation of Islam leader was invited to speak on the attack ? of black leaders by the Winston- \ ? Salem Four Committee and I. Mosque #56. The Winston-Salem < Four are local black leaders indict ' ed by the government for political ? corruption: ' Alderman Larry ' Womble, former Alderman Patrick Hairston, consultant Rodney Sum^ : ler and community activist the Rev. . Lee Faye Mack. Their trial is now in its fifth week in federal court in ; Greensboro. "I came tonight to speak the ; truth/ said Farrakhan, while ; receiving numerous standing ova ; tions and cheers from the audience. He encouraged the crowd to ; support the Winston- Salem Four, ; who he said, were victims of the ; It's bigger than tfte Winston Four. It's about power, it's about leader ship. It's about the ability to orga nize effectively." "The wicked have always ^charged the righteous. But we say to the Winston-Four, like the Jew ish survivors of the Holocaust said, ^ever again'. Never again will we let our brothers and sister go to trial alone," he preached. Although the event was free to the public, the $5,200 raised from donations made that night were donated to the Winston-Salem Four Committee. Farrakhan also announced that the proceeds from the audio and video tapes will go exclusively to the committee. "Who are your accusers? A government who is guilty of mur der, a government who is guilty of robbery, kidnapping, drug running. A government who is guilty of Cheers from the audience, echoed the auditiorium throughout the three-hour speech. Farrakhan named the mayors of Washington D.C., Chicago and Atlanta, all of whom he said, have been victims of investigations by government agencies trying to separate the peo ple from its leaders. ~~ "How can (the government) accuse you of some little cheap crime when they are the major criminals?" he asked. "Their purpose is to break you and your influence," he said, while pointing to Sumler. He also left the audience in shock when he criticized Alderman Vivian Burke for choosing to side with four white aldermen. "One of your own brbke ranks. She should have never been sent back and must be taken out of power. I know HEHTSto or, , should be^an^outcast in our com munity. Make them regret the day they made a decision against the best interest of the black communi ty, " he shouted. "Look at you. You four black aldermen had the juice. You were over finance committees, public works committees. But if you stayed in unity, you would have had power over the entire city," he said. "But it's our personality differ ences that make us so blind to the bigger objective. Our objective is liberation," he said. Attending the event were aldermen Nelson Malloy and Vir ginia Newell; President and CEO of the Urban League, D. Smith; 12th Congressional District candi date Larry Little, Bishop Freddie Marshall, Winston-Salem Mosque ?>#56 Minister Ray X and mistress 5f\jof ceremony, Hazel Mack.
