Sloan, special col lections librarian at Mary Wash ' ington College in Fredericksburg, Va., and former resident of Win ston-Salem, will attend the First International Conference on Women in Africa and the African Diaspora: Bridges Across Activism and the Academy, in Nigeria, July 11-25. Sloan received funding for the conference from the college's fac ulty development and internation al program committee. LeRoy S. Strohl, director of the library, says the library uses the expertise of all librarians in collection development. In the past, Sloan has worked in the areas of women's studies and African-American culture. No one has covered the African continent. Sloan will be able to further the collection development in these areas, adding to the library support of the cultural diversity. "This golden opportunity is an integral part of my personal and professional development ? it will broaden my views about African women and their cultures, enable me to learn from my inter national colleagues' experience, and allow me to return to my ancestral home." There will be a post-confer ence travel to Enugu, Lagos, Ife, Ibadan, and Oshogbo. Sloan is the daughter of Mrs. Evelyn S. Sloan and the late Rev. Louis R. Sloan. i Rrenda D.
