WSSU alumna honored
Ritchie G. Carroll, a local edu
cator and Winston-Salem State Uni
versity alumnus, will be honored as
the "Delta Great Teacher" at the
41st national convention of Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority held in Balti
more, Md. July 10-15.
The purpose of the "Salute to
Delta Great Teachers" is to recog
nize outstanding contributions of
classroom teachers who are mem
bers of the sorority. Over 100 edu
cators will be honored.
Carroll is a 1975 honor gradu
ate of WSSU. She has been a teach
er for 17 years. She is currently a
pre- kindergarten teacher at Baldwin
Elementary School in Manassas,
Va. Prior to coming to Manassas,
she was "Teacher of the Year and
received a "PTA Educator of the
Year" in Charlotte. Since coming to
Manassas, she was selected as
"Teacher of the Year" and was the
recipient of the "Washington Post
Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher
Award."
Carroll is married to William
M. Carroll and has two sons, Brion
and Bryan. She is the daughter of
Dorothy Graham-Wheeler and the
late Richard K. Graham.

Urban League
now offering
memberships
The Winston-Salem Urban
League has begun its first effort to
build an official network of Urban
League supporters throughout the
community by offering member
ships to the agency.
Members of the Urban League
will participate in the election pro
cess of new Urban League board
members at the annual meeting in
August. They will also receive
membership cards and a one-year
subscription to the Urban League
Connection , the agency's quarterly
newsletter.
"We join other Urban League
affiliates throughout the nation in
opening and encouraging the com
munity to become a part of the
Urban League family," says the
Rev. Douglas Summers, an Urban
League board member and mem
bership committee chairman. "We
want to partnership with the com
munity in our goal of strengthening
families in need, especially
African-American families."
The mission of the Urban
League is to promote the full partic
ipation of African-Americans, other
minorities and disadvantaged citi
zens in the economic and social
fabric of society.
All those submitting applica
tions by July 31 will be able to par
ticipate in the Urban League's annu
al meeting to be held in August.
