School Buddies * mall project to assist children The local school system has teamed up with a local shopping mail, radio station, and the United Way to address the back-to-school needs of less fortunate children in the area. "Project: School Buddies'* will help over 500 children identified by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system social work-* ers as in dire need of clothing and school supplies for going back to ? school this fall. Those wanting to help should visit the two "Project: School Bud dies" displays at Hanes Mall through August 30 and select a card listing pertinent information about a child. The customer then collects merchandise that will fulfill those specific netds and returns the donation to the display. School social workers will make sure the donations are distributed to the children. Only new clothing and school supplies will be accepted as requested by the social worker staff. "Project: School Buddies" dis plays are located on the lower level of Hanes Mall near Belk and Dillard's, and includes information about stores with special offers to customers wanting to make pur chases for donations. Hanes Mall also is offering a $5 mall gift certificate to those making donations while presenting $100 in mall receipts to customer service. Details are at the mall dis plays for the project The program is supported by WSJS radio and the local United Way. UNC police discrimination case appealed HILLSBOROUGH (AP) ? An attorney for three former Uni-. versity of North Carolina at Clypel Hill police officials has appealed a Jury verdict that they discriminated against a campus police officer because she is a black woman. After a two-week trial that ended July 9, an Orange County jury awarded Keith Edwards $116,000 in damages. Verdicts were returned against former police chief Charles Mauer, former director of public safety Robert Sherman and former interim public safety director John DeVitto. The lawsuit claimed that the school denied Ms. Edwards her constitutional rights by passing over her for promotions and by punishing her for complaining about it. Ms. Edwards, who has worked for the University of North Caroli na at Chapel Hill for the past 17 years, originally filed suit against seven university officials in 1990, asking for $250,000. The case against four of them, including Chancellor Paul Hardin, was dropped. It could be several months before the case is heard by the state Court of Appeals.
