A&T threesome named to pre-season All-MEAC team By Chronicle Staff Three North Carolina A&T players have been selected to this year's pre-season All MEAC football team. Named to this year's squad are cornerback Alonza Bamett, Fla. distinguished himself as a stellar pass defender, finishing the *91 season as the league co leader in interceptions with eight. He returned one interrcep tion for a touchdown. In addition, Bamett is a rep utable hitter. His 69 stops were accounted for 1,166 total offen sive yards and 1 1 touchdowns to rank second in the conference in scoring and rushing (851 yards, 6.65 yards per carry, seven scores). He also finished third in all-purpose yards. Aside from being A&Ts top Photo courtesy of Black College Sports Review Aggie running back Barry Turner proved to be one of the conference's premier all-around per formers last season. running back Barry Turner and defensive lineman Charles Williams. Barnett enters the season with the most notoriety, having been a first team all-conference pick last season. The 6-2, 175 pounds senior from Jacksonville, the second-highest on the team last season. When it comes to versatile backs, there aren't many in the MEAC who are in the same class as Turner, an All -ME AC second teamer last season. The 6-0, 190 pounds Gastonia junior ballcarrier, Turner was handy as a pass catcher as the team's No. 2 receiver (24 catches for 315 yards and four scores). Williams, a 5-11, 220 pounds nose tackle, is expected to help fill the void created by the departure of Knox Thompson, Wm ' il ?Slfc - ! r ?semi-pro baseball doubled der Ison the sport# aglnda ?theannual Old Timers Game il|fli|ilafe ;?aivi?prd^0ii$4n Iduled for Sunday at Ernie ? The Aggies coaching staff is confident that Williams will enable A&T's "Blue Death" defense to compile similiar numbers to last year when they were the league lead ers in third down conversion defense (27 percent), quarter back sacks (47), interceptions (22) and recovered fumbles (23). A&T notes In spite of their returning cast, the Aggies were not picked to repeat as conference champs this season. One poll, which includes conference coaches and sports information directors, picked A&T to finish third behind Delaware State and South Carolina State. The media poll picked the Aggies to finish second behind Del State. Aggies coach Bill Hayes isn't making any bold predic tions about this year's team. He's not openly talking champi- ~ onship, but hints that his guys will be in the hunt for the prize by season's end. "We have a solid team overall with a great number of returning players," Hayes said. "I just hope we are strong enough to stand the pres sure of a tough schedule. A quarterback has not been select ed yet to lead the offense, but our strength right now is the defense, especially at linebacker and in the secondary." One fella who could make an immediate impact is A&T's top recruit, Carl Warren, a placekicker from Fayetteville. Warren's expertise, will be an added plus. Placekicking was not an Aggie strength last year. WESTON TRAVEL RAM OF THE WEEK Weston Travel is pleased to recog nize Cupid Kellum as our Ram of the Week.
