Carver Alumni inducts four former Carver students The inaugural Hall of Fame of the Carver High School Alumni Association will be held on Saturday September 5 at 7 p.m. in the Benton Convention Cen ter. The induction ceremony will take place at the awards dinner. There will be four inductees in the class of 1992, who will be inducted in two categories. Dr. Sadie Brown-Webster and Sarah Friende Hamlin were inducted in the category, Excellence in Academics. George "Porgie" Jones and Harden "Butch" Wheeler were inducted in the category, Excellence in Athletics. Excellence in Achievement will not have any inductees this year. Sarah Friende-Hamlin was valedictorian for the Carver class of 1939. After graduating from Winston Salem State Teachers College with honors, Friende Hamlin began teaching but that was only one of her many life roles. As an entrepreneur, she and her hus band owned and operated Sackie's Fldrist. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Saint Paul United Methodist Church in Kemersville. Dr. Sadie Brown- Webster, director of the division , . , .... * ' of nursing at Winston-Salem State University gradu ated from Carver in 1952. Valedictorian of her class, she was active in the student government, French Club and Drama Club. A graduate of WSSU, Webster earned member ship into the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society and Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. George C. Jones was a five-letterman in high school and made player of the week several times during his Carver High School days. As captair^Sf^ the football team in 1956 and 1957, Jones led his team to many victories. In tennis, he coached two slate tennis championships. He is currently the assistant secretary for admin istration in the department of human resources. Harden B. Wheeler Jr. known as "Butch", gradu ated from Carver High School in 1965 and went on to WSSU where he majored in physical education. Presently he is a special education teacher at Paisley Middle School. Wheeler is an active member of First Baptist Church where he sings on the men's choir and a member of the finance committee.
