Mount Zion closes Men 's Day campaign
For some time now, echoes
from the hymn "Rise Up O Men of
God" have been heard around
Mount Zion Baptist Church. The
reason for this affirmation will
become clear when four programs
take place at the church this week
end.
The schedule of events includes
a family fashion show, a brother
hood breakfast, regular worship ser
vices, and a salute to the African
American male.*
According to church public
relations, these activities will mark
the close of the annual Men's Day
campaign benefiting the building
fund of the church.
The gala weekend begins with
a family fashion show in the File
Goodwin Life Enrichment Center at
1 p.m. Saturday.
In addition to making fashion
s^aTgrftents in the outfits of their
choice, the male models and their
families will reflect "family values"
from a black perspective.
In a light-hearted reference to
the women's participation in the
men's fashion show, one of the
coordinators said, "we did not want
to come off as totally chauvinistic
in putting this program together." It
was a comment not lost on Jean
nette T. Lewis and Delores Graham
who agreed to help Robert Leath
and Leroy Anderson organize the
fashion show.
Models include: Robert Cal
loway, Keith Lighty, Lawrence
Murray, James Franklin, William
Terry, Darryl Ray, Rodney Cooper,
and Dr. S T. Churn.
On Sunday a continental break
fast and a visit from United States
Congressional candidate, Mel Watt,
will set the tone for Mount Zion
laymen and friends. Watt is a candi
date for the 12th Congressional Dis
tric and will be the guest of honor at
the pre-church school fellowship.
Persons interested in attending
should contact Clark Gaither at
722-2325.
The chaplain of Shaw Universi
ty, the Rev. Darryl Robinson, will
deliver the message during the reg
ular morning worship hour. Repre
sentatives from the layity of the
church and other members of the
clergy will be co-celebrants with
Chaplain Robinson during the 1 1
a.m. worship.
At 3:30 p.m. the sponsoring
committee will host "A Gathering
of Men." This feature will showcase
the dramatic and musical talents of
local African-American males. The
program format will include writ
ings, speeches*' and music represen
tative of the black male..
"We want this to be a celebra
tion of ourselves and a salute to
black men in all walks of life," stat
ed the program chairman, H.L.
Shaw..
Some of the program partici
pants in "A Gathering of Men" will
include Mayor Pro Temp Vivian H.
Burke, Alderman Larry Womble,
Emory Jones, Douglas Summers,

Hughes, Carl Cloud, Rudy Ander
son, Alvin Atkinson, and Shederick

Also appearing will be James
E. Stowe, James Funches, Clayton

bar and Clark Gaither will also be

noon program will be an opportuni
ty for the audience to name local
black males who have risen to the
occasion in their time. The idea for
this feature resufoed from talks with
Dr. William Rice, a local historian.
All Men's Day activities at
Mount Zion are open to the public.
