For example, Flint, Mich., which has one of the highest crime rates in that state, also has one of the best junior golf programs in the country. "We asked organizations, such as the Lions Club, Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Flint Golferettes, the VPCA club and a guy named Herman Marshall to donate $200 a year," said Sam Neeley, director of the Flint Inner City program. ^w' The Flint inner city program, which works with youngsters from five to 17 years old, charges $10 per youngster at the begin ning of the 16- week program and allows them to play free golf during the entire period. The program is also responsible for bringing golf to the middle schools and the high schools. 'Flint currently has over 80 students 1n that program. "I make recruiting presentations at the city schools," Neeley said. "We have formed teams in the schools and we try to get as many kids as possible." NGF statistics show that North Carolina ranks 14th in the nation in golf participation, which translates to more than 609,000 people playing golf. United States Golf Association figures reveal that there are 44 junior pro grams in the state. Although the local junior golf situation looks bleak, Winston Lake is not the only organization that has a program. According to Jamison, Tanglewood Golf Course, the Wake Forest Golf Camp. Pine Knolls and some pri vate clubs around town have their own junior golf programs. Yet, the numbers of minorities in the sport are still low -- particularly at the high school level. Of the eight city/county high schools, there aren't five minorities who play golf for their respective shcools. Junior golf could improve if there's ade quate financial help coming from the corpo rate world. Winston-Salem is the home of R.J. Reynolds, Sarah Lee, Hanes and Stroh's, just to name a few. But not one company has adopted or is sufficiently funding junior golf programs in this city. In Winston-Salem, the inexpensive sports reign supreme. Winston Lake has devel oped a solid AAU basketball program. The baseball, football, tennis and track programs around the city have provided opportunities for minorities to improve their athletic skills while receiving a college education. f City/County Junior Varsity > Football Scores From games played on October 8th Greensboro Page 28 Carver 0 Burlington Williams 29 East Forsyth 6 Davie County 22 Mt. "I know that several of my coaches have head coaching ambi tions, so hopefully they can get that experience and we will learn from each other," Wilkes added. "If our program is successful, people may, come and try to pick up these guys." McKoy has a strong connection with both football programs. He is the only coach on the staff who played at Carver. His reasoning for returning to Carver are based on what he sees as a need to be of ser vice to black youth. "I saw that there was a need for leadership and role models in the black community," said McKoy. "This position is also allowing me to give something back to my community." ?
