Little's Art Expresses Childhood Memories Ulenda Wharton-Little, a pro fessional artist on "the" faculty at Winston-Salem State University," has created a site-specific arts instal lation, "The Crawl Space," which - deals with issues of repressed child and childhood fantasies. The instal lation will be on display from Feb 2 through March 29 at the university's' Diggs Gallery. Viewers participate in the work by walking through four different rooms: "The Child's Room," "The Sick Room," "The Room of Trans formation," and "The Womb Cham -ber." The multimedia installation incorporates sculpture, found objects, painting, video and viewer interaction. Wharton-Little has exhibited at the Southeastern Center for Contem porary Art and the Sawtooth Center for Visual Design in Winston-Salem the Corcoran Museum of Art in Washington, DC; the Greenhill Cen ter for Art, located in Greensboro; and the Diggs Gallery at Winston Salcm State University, __ The Winstort-Salem native is a graduate of North Carolina State University. She received a bache lor's degree in fine arts from the Corcoran School and a master's of fine arts from Columbia University. Wharton-Little has taught art and an history at WSSU since 1989. She also is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer and has mastered many different media, from glass blowing ttr^rrxlro to painting and drawing. Wharton-Little is a 1991 recipient of an artists fellowship from the Arts Council of Winston Salem/Forsyth County. The Diggs Gallery at Winston Salem State University is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sat urdays. The gallery is located in the lower level of O'Kelly Library. The public is invited to attend. There is no charge for admission. Frye Receives NAACP Award The North Carolina State NAACP will hold its ninth annual Kelly Miller Alexander Sr. Humanitarian*- Awards Banquet, Saturday, Feb. 6th. The event will be held at the Holiday Inn, Four Seasons, Town Centre, 3121 High Point Rd. North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Henry Frye is this year's honoree. A native of Ellerbe, in Richmond County, Judge Frye attended North Caroli na A&T State University in Greensboro and the University of North CarolinaV Iaw school, receiving the JD Degree with hon ors. Through an appointment by Governor Jim Hunt in 1983, Frye became the first black to serve as a member of the North Carolina Supreme Court. Many wilf . remember Green as one of the "Little Rock Nine," who integrat ed Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Green was Cen tral High's first black graduate. Green's experience in the struggle for integration in public school was featured in a movie about his life, entitled, "The Ernest Green Story*" which first aired Jan 17, on the Disney Channel.
