Odom is the son of Minister Deborah Odom of Winston-Salem. According to Odom, he played during the ninth and 10th grade at Parkland High School then trans ferred to Carver his junior year. He begin playing football when he was very young on the Pop Warner League with the Greyhounds. "I went to visit Elizabeth City State University and liked the way they treated me, and I also saw that they had the top graduating rate among athletes of other schools. I plan to major in computer science," Odom said. According to Odom's mother, "I'm very proud of the fact that he was able to secure a scholarship playing football. The most impor tant thing is that he focus on acade mics, and we thank our All Mighty God for making it all possible." v "Yes, I certainly want to th&nk God for making it possible fofine to go to college. In the beginning of my junior year I wasn't going to play football because I thought they had already chosen their team. But, I worked hard, made the team and started that year," Odom said. According to Coach Keith Wilkes, "Odom came to up from Parkland and he was as real good student. He played hard football for us last year. This year he played defensive-end and we have moved him around quite a bit this year. He's a hard worker and has kept his grades. He was one of our better students on the team. I've always tried to express to the team how important it was to keep their grades up." Simpson, Team USA Donald Simpson, an outstand ing powerlifter from Winston Salem. has been selected to represent the United States and the State of North Carolina as a member of Team USA which is'being formed for two 1 993 international Powerlift ing meets. Simpson and his teammates will first compete against Team Sweden in Stockholm on April 12 and then against Team Finland in Helsinki on April 15. The organizers are anticipating that several world records could be broken during the competition, and according to Simpson," 1 will be one of the ones who break a world record. I am in the 148-50 pound class and set the state record last accept Christ first they can do any thing. They shouldn't use drugs, drink, and should always say their prayers at night. Health and strength is the great est gift from God. Some people with hardships makes me realize I am blessed. People look at their misfor tunes instead of looking at their for tunes and reaching out. Hanes Hosiery All~Stars compete in Special Event Basketball Tournament Corbett Steps Down As Head Coach Of A&T State University Basketball Team GREENSBORO. S C. - Don Corbett. head basketball coach at North Carolina A&T State Univer sity for the past 14 years, has relin quished his coaching position at the University. Corbett informed Dr. Edward B. Fort, A&T chancellor, of his decision Thursday afternoon. March 11. He will retain his teaching responsibilities at the University. "I have served for fourteen years as the basketball coach at North Carolina A&T State Univer sity," said Corbett. "These years have been very rewarding years, ones that I will always remember and shall always cherish. However, at this point in my career. I feel that this is an appropriate time for the University's basketball program to move in another direction, for me personally. I too need the opportuni ty to have some free time; time free of pressure to enjoy my family, pur sue other goals or even just simply to smell the roses. Therefore. I have decided to step down as head coach at the University. My plans are to remain at the University and in the city of Greensboro." "I want to commend Coach Corbett for 14 years of splendid commitment to this University and the development of the young peo ple whom he coached," said Fort. "I enjoyed working with him in his capacity as our basketball coach. We are pleased that Mr. Corbett will remain with us and continue to contribute to the University and its programs." "Don Corbett has secured his place in history here at North Car olina A&T State University," said Dr. Willie Burden, athletic director. "He has earned great respect throughout the country for his coaching accomplishments. We wish him well as he pursues other goals." I do want to be there because I am a world record holder, but where ever I go it is to spread the word of Christ. I'm taking God with me. not fame or fortune," Simpson concluded.
