Jeff Owen, Ashanti McDowell, .Tony Surles, and Jonathon Webb defeated the tournament host 14th Street Recreation Center in consecuti v e games to win the 1993 14th Street Invitational 10-12 .year-old Bas ketball Tournament. Landon Moore, of Hanes Hosiery was named the tourna ments most valuable player and had 31 assists for the tournament, while Hanes power forwards. Jeff Owen had 45 points and Ashanti McDowell hit 44 in the tourna ment. Ottrer Hanes standouts include Tony Surles with 19 points, and Jonothon Webb had 27. The defense was led by Matt Carter, Tommy McGuinn and Bradley Tuttle. Owen and McDowell controlled the boards with 34 rebounds between the two. Hanes was coached by Art Blevins and Gary Lash. 14th Street was led by Danny Gathings who had 35 points for the tournament. Mike Bowman with 19. Donnell Hairston with 18. Mike King with 14. and Charles Westmore hitting 12. 14th Street was coached by BriarfLeak who was also the tour nament director. The Hanes Hosiery All-Stars won in the first roufid with a high scoring offense 83-57. and knocked out 14th Street 82-60 to win the championship. "I am very proud of four of my All-Star players: Trey Williams, Derek Chisolm, Carter Williams and KC Dobbins who all have made AAU teams and have helped lead their AAU teams to the State Finals. Hanes Hosiery Closes Out Season The Hanes Hosiery Recreation Center under the direction of Art Blevins and his staff Gary Lash and Queen Wright finishe^Hrp their win ter basketball program. According to Blevins it was a very successful season in which 141 kids played basketball in four intra mural leagues at the Hosier)'. > There was a league for 6-9 year-olds, and leagues for 13-15 and 16-18 year-olds. Regular season games began in January and ran through March with tournament games and champi onships for each league. Thefl- AR-Star learns -were picked to play in different tourna ment through-out the city. Hanes Hosiery All-Star teams won three tournaments in post-sea son play. Hanes is also very proud of the following young men who played this veax at the Hosiery, that were selected to AAU teams.. .Carter Williams.
