Adventure Camping
Tired of the usual vacation at
the beach? Looking for an activity to
get the kids away from the Nintendo
this summer?
Camp may be just the "adven
ture" you're looking for! Imagine
evenings spent around a camp fire
and sleeping under the .stars some
where in the wilderness of the
National Forest. Everyday adventures
include rock climbing, rappelling.
canoeing, kayaking, caving, moun
tain biking, backpacking and hiking.
Camping is not just for fun. it
teaches youth how to survive "com
fortably" in the wilderness while hav
ing fun. and to return home with
increased confidence and memories
to last a lifetime. Wilderness camping
promotes the development of positive
? leadership, self-confidence and~seif^
esteem^as well as teamwork and
cooperation amone the participants.
The experiences are designed to test
physical limits and endurance while
having fun and developing a mature
and responsible mental attitude.
Camps offering adventure activi
ties, incorporated with classes on
nature, first aid. fire by friction, edi
ble plants, surv ival and more, provide
a rewarding as well as an educational
experience.
When selecting a camp, there are
many considerations, not the least of
which is the experience and reputa
tion of the camp and its counselors.
Does the camp provide all the equip
ment? What about meals-are they
nutritious and well -prepared? What is
the counselor/camper ratio? Are
groups co-ed? Does the camp offer
shuttle service from the nearest air
port or other site? What is the cost,
how is it paid and what discounts are
available?
Camping is a wonderful alterna
tive to spending the summer indoors
hood. It offers kids the opportunity to
meet new friends, eniov new chal
lenges and bring back memories that
will never be forgotten!
