INSIDE A CLASSIFIEDS A OBITUARY A ENTERTAINMENT A RELIGION A BUSINESS Sports B 1 Hanes Hosiery Summer "Hot Hoops" Playing in the 11- to 14-year old Hanes Hosiery Hot Hoops, the Lakers defeated the Bulls 49-35. Carl Potter ripped the nets for 18 points, while Ryan Otatti poured in IS, including three 3-pointers in a row as the Lakers foiled to a vic . tory over the Bulls. Kevin Wilson, Teddy Farit and Khionta Butterfield led the Lakers rebounding, while Farced Rahmaan and Jamie Harold turned in good defensive games. The Bulls were led by Chauncey Surles with 19 points and Allen Hall with 10. Tommy McGuinn, Justin Anderson, Tony Surles, Joel Justice and Kurtis Checks turned in good perfor mances for the Bulls. The Sonics also had an out standing game defeating the Suns by four points, when Kevin McLean, the Sonics floor leader turned in an all-around super per formance with 18 points and 12 assists to lead the Sonics over the Sunt 51-47. ' P Ricky Royst?r dominated the inside, grabbing 14 rebounds while scoring 10 points for the Sonics. Art Brown of the Sonics had 11 rebounds, 1 1 points and two blocks. Other Sonic standouts include: Bryan Mills, Breon JohnsOn, Mark Kato, Corey Burchette and Dee Howell. The Suns were led by Shaun Williford who really put on a show keeping the Suns close all through the game while making clutch bas kets all day. Williford poufed in 28 points on some really nice shots. The Suns also got good play from Jake Guarantano who had 10 points, Josh Bailey, Lane Williams, Timmy Beal, Santini Brim, Bran don Harold and Kris Hooper. Also playing in the 1 1- to 14 year-old league, the Celtics over powered the Hornets 55-29, when Rico Burton, Kendro Pollard and Jamal Samuels combined for 40 of the team's 55 points ad were too much force inside for the Hornets,, who played without their "Big Men" as the Celtics rolled over the Hornets. Burton controlled the boards with 19 rebounds and 20 points, while Pollard and Samuels ripped in 10 points each. Other Celtic players were: Mario Pitts, Robert Latin, Antwan Colveit, Tim Penn, Shaun Leak and Tremaine Mills. The Hornets were led by James Moore, Chris Blackwell, Akili Mar shall, Quann Richardson, Cory Caldwell and Jordan Lash. Please see page B3 It's ball control action for the Hosiery rebound. A boxing exhibition was held this week at 14th Street Recreation Cen ter's Fun Day with contestants demonstrating powerful punching action. 14th Street Has Fun Day It was a day packed with fun filled excitement and lots of good things to eat at 14th Street Recre ation Center on June 29. That was the day that the center held "Fun Day." The excitement began with a B9B99BBBSB9BSBB995! Theft it was time for a exhaust ing game of volleyball. Afterwards, over 100 participants were waiting anxiously for the cookouL To finish off the evening, guests were entertained by a boxing exhibition by Jermaine Myers, Over 100 participants anxiously awaited the cookout. softball game for anyone who want ed to test their athletic abilities and play. Later that morning, there was a movie and refreshments, a nice break from all the excitement The day continued with a vari ety of entertainment, including crafts, card games and art The prize was a watermelon. Am way Hairston, Prince Tuttle and Rico Hairston from the 14th Street Recreation boxing team. To end a perfectly entertaining evening, Shin-Do Karate Team and their students from Kingston Green Recreation Center (sponsored by McDonalds of Clemmons) put on a demonstration and broke boards and blocks and did some sparring. 14th Street Late The 14th Street Late Night Summer League began June 22, with three games on tap. In the first game, the Big Boys lost to the fast-dunking 11th Street team, with a score of 67-58 in a very close game that lasted until the last two minutes. Jesie Byrd hita whopping 23 points, and Julius Minor, who experienced early foul trou ble, soon bounced back and scored 14 points for 1 1th Street Jerome Davis was down on the nets, hitting 15 points, and Curtis Coleman kept the floors hot as he added another 1 1. In the second game, it was power play action as the Tarheels defeated the North Boys 75-67, The Tarheels were led by William Bitting, who would bounce off the walls if necessary as he added an additional 20 points. Jack Bitting and Kemp Robinson weren't forgotten as they < chipped in 13 points each. Barry Washington was also hot on the floor, as he scored 20 points for the North Boys. The final game of the evening was consid It's powerful defense that blocks this playterfrom the net. Night Summer League Begins ered by fans the most exciting of all. It was a game not intended for fans with faint hearts, as State Farm defeated Nubian 56-55. Nubian took the lead by two points with 10 seconds left on the clock, but Tim Wilbom rattled their cage with a 3-point basket three seconds before the final buzzer to seal the vic tory for State Farm. Tim Wilborn had 15 points for State Farm, and Vincent Brown scored 16 for Nubian. Who has the bally anyway?
