Page A8 Winston-Salem Chronicle Thursday, September 9, 1993 College Asks Students For Police Clearance RALEIGH (AP) — A college shaken last year by a slaying, the shooting of a child and a dorm rob bery is asking applicants for a letter from their hometown police depart ment certifying whether they have a criminal record. “There’s no reason to bring Jack the Ripper on campus just because he applied,” said St. Augustine’s College spokesman Tracey Todd. “We are looked at as the guardians of students while they’re here and their parents look to us provide the best possible safety.” The request was made of all 3,400 people who applied to the his torically black college as freshmen or transfer students this year, said Wanzo Hendrix, admissions direc tor at the 1,900-student school. About 95 percent complied. A few reported criminal backgrounds, said Wiley Davis, vice president for student affairs. “It doesn’t necessarily mean a student will be turned down,” Davis said. “But if he was on proba tion for murder, we wouldn’t take him.” On campus during the past year, a student was shot to death and another was charged with mur der; an 8-year-old was shot outside a gym during a basketball game; and four students were held up in their dormitory room by a masked man. Many colleges ask applicants whether they have been convicted of a crime. But Dorothy Siegel, execu tive director of the national Campus Violence Prevention Center, said her organization knows of no other four-year U.S. college requesting a letter from the police. “Some institutions are look ing for ways to relieve themselves of liability,” she said. “There’s been a lot of heat over whether cam puses are responsible for the behav ior of students.” Red Cross Needs Drivers The Northwest North Carolina Chapter of the American Re, Cross has an immediate need for volunteer drivers.
