Freshman Guard Hopes to
Point Team into Right Direction

' ttlenn High's Ernest Nichols hopes to
make a big splash in his first season as
junior varsity basketball coach. And the
first thing he did was to give the ball to
freshman point guard Jarian Wallace.
"Jarian's going to be the key this
year," Nichols said about the 15-year old.
"He's got to make sure everyone's going to
get the ball, be able to break presses, break
down his man with penetration and be the
leader on defense."
Nichols expects a lot from Wallace
but he believes the youngster will deliver.
When Nichols replaced Swandell Cloud,
who resigned his jayvee duties for health
reasons, he wanted to build a contender
from the ashes of last yeVs 2-19 team.
The first thing he did as coach was to
make Wallace a starter.
Nichols has watched Wallace devel
op as a player ever since he coached Wal
lace on his Pop Warner football team as a
defensive back. Nichols "Watched the
youngster become a standout player at the
Winston Lake YMCA youth basketball
leagues and now into his current role as
the Bobcats lead guard.
"Playing at the Y made me develop
as a basketball player. Without them, 1
wouldn't be the player that I am," Wallace
said, who started playing at age seven in
the then- 7-11 league. "My first coach
Paul Stoncy taught me the fundamentals
of the game, how to pass and how to get
the ball to the right people."
Wallace played at Winston Lake until
last year, when he decided he was ready to -
try out for Glenn. Wallace honed his skills
last summer in the Reynolds Park League,
where lie was introduced to his eventual
role of point guard.
But Wallacc had an added incentive
when he was omitted from the 14 and
under Winston-Salem AAU team, which
made Wallacc more determined to make
the Bobcats squad.
"Being my first year at Glenn, 1
wanted to prove myself as a basketball
player. cspcciaUy after being cut fnwn the
*?id. "It means a lot
to wear the uniform. If I do good, then
people will notice me. and maybe I'll have
a shot a playing ball at a college after
wards."
Wallace has made an immediate
impact so far. Against Bast Forsyth, Wal
lace shredded last year's junior varsity
tournament winners for 14 points. 10
assists and 3 steals in his Glenn debut, a
89-77 win. It's right on target for Wallacc.
who set his goals to average around 12
points. 8 assists and 3 steals per contest.
Wallacc has also made strides in
other areas. An admittedly* average

Wallace believes that he has becomc bet
tier at playing the passing lanes on defense.
Nichols said the freshman has becomc
fnorc adept at reading zone defenses in
halfcourt situations.
"In previous years, Jarian was a scor
k cr who ran up and down the court and did
n't worry that much about defense,"
Nichols said. "But his role has changed
and he has progressed a long way to
become a better player."
But Nichols would like to sec Wal
lace improve on other parts of his game.
At five-foot-six, Wallace needs to add
bulk to his pencil-size frame in order to
survive the pounding he would reccive at
the varsity level. Nichols also wants his
point guard to be more assertive on the
court , become a more vocal leader.
Nichols added that Wallace's biggest
attribute may be his heart and confidence.
"A lot of people don't cxpcct Glenn
to be good this year, but that's going to
change this year," Wallace said. "I think
we're going to surprise some people this
year."
But Nichols said for Glenn to make
some noise. Wallace is the key.
"I knew I had every thing in place, but
I needed a point guard and Jarian was the
final piece to the puzzle." Nichols said.
"We're going to be in trouble if I lose him
to an injury. He's that important. As he
goes, so does the team." ,
