A pair of Hanes Hosiery Recreational All-Star basketball teams captured championships in tournament play this week in Pfafftown in the West Central Com munity Center Invitational held March 17-24. The 14-under Hanes team defeated the West Central All-star squad 70-63 and. 72-64 in double elimination to wih the title. To get to'the championship, the Hanes team defeated Yadkin County 71f50 and Stokes County 79-73. The Hanes All-star team consisted of B.J. Bristow, Tyree Kirby, Jordan Lash, Ashanti McDowell, Michael Rucker, Robert Scott.Tony Surles. John Webb an|d Shawn Williford. Webb led the team with 81 poinfci in the tournament, followed by Bris . tow's 61 . The 16-under Hanes team us?d their quickness and a trapping defense to corral its cham pionship.The Hanes All-Stars beat; a determined Stokes County teamJZ2z_ 63 to claim its second straight championship in the tournament. In the first round. Hanes whipped Mid way's All-star squad 63-49 and knocked off the Surry County Youth Basketball League B feum 99-63 as seven Hanes players scored in double figures. ^ The 16-under team consisted of Josh Bailey, Rico Bruton, Corey Burchette, Teddy Fant. Sign-Up Dates for Tiny Indians Named The Tiny Indians organization of the Northwest Midget Football League announced dates for regis tration for the 1994 football season. The Indians will field teams in . five age groupsin the Flag, Mitey Mites, Jr. PeeWee, PeeAVee and Junior Bantam divisions. Sign up dates will be from 10 a m -2 p.m. April 2. 16 and 30'. May 14 and 28; June 1 1 and 25; and July ~ 9 and 23. The sign-dps will take place at Laurel Wall, across from the Winston Mutual Building. Central AAU Takes Gastonia Tourney By MICHAEL JOHNSON Chronicle Sports Wntcr The Carolina Hornets 13-under Amateur Athletic Union basketball team won the tenth annual Sun Drop Shootout Tournament in Gastonia, clinching its setond championship in two weeks. The Hornets won the Greensboro Invitational Tournament last week. ?The Hornets defeated four teams on its way to the champi onship last Saturday and Sunday: Winston Lake, 37-35 in overtime; the Charlotte Warriors. 41-11; the Kernersville Hurricanes,61-46; and the Raleigh Rockets 54-31 . Carolina Central's most intriguing contest was against Win ston Lake, who led until the final minutes of regulation when Travis Holcomb-Frye made a steal and converted it to tie the game with five seconds left In overtime, Rodmond Dun lop's steal and conversion tied the game at 35-35 before Holcomb Frye's steal and offensive rebound of his missed shot accounted for the game's final margin. It was the second time Hol comb-Frve's heroics saved a game for Carolina Central. Holcomb Frye's steal against the Charlotte Sonics blue team ia last week's championship game set up the win ning basket for the Hornets in Greensbgro. Against Charlotte. Marcus Oliver scored 15 points and hauled in six rebounds. Against Kern ersville, A.J. Steele and Carter Williams each scored 14 points to withstand a 24-point effort from the Hurricanes' Jason Brown. And in the championship game against Raleigh. Steele scored 14 points to lead Carolina Central and Oliver and Mike Dames scored 1 1 each. Dames was named the tourna ment's most valuable player; He was joined by Steele and Williams on the A1l-tournament team. & ...
