Clinton Names Blacks to Physical Fitness Council

Clinton has appointed three African
American sports, fitness, and com ?
munity leaders as members of the
President's Council of Physical Fit
ness and Sports,
The African-American
appointees are Ralph Boston an
Olympic lo^g-jump gold medalist,
womems pro tennis star Zina Garri
son-JacksOn and former pro football
player Calvin Hill. ,

other council members from diverse
backgrounds. In selecting the 15
appointees to the 20 member coun
cil, President Clinton sought indi
viduals from a wide range of back
grounds with outstanding records of
leadership and community
involvement.
The three newly , appointed
African Americans will join PCPFS
co-chair Joyner and Tom McMillen,
who were appointed by President
-Clinton in June of last year. All or
the newly appointed African Ameri
cans have, been active in their com
munities. working on behalf of
inner-city and disadvantaged
. t
citizens.
In his remarks at the May 3^1
White House Rose Garden swearing
in ceremony, Clinton recognized the
importance of sports and recreation
activities in child development.
"When you're involved in
teamwork, you learn how to deal
with the disappointment of defeat,
and frustration, you even learn how
to manqgf unfairness These are
important things ! lessons in life that
have to be learned." v
Ralph Boston, of Atlanta and
Tennessee, is a gold Medal winner
jump at the 1960 Olympics in
Rome, where he surpassed Jesse
Owens' 25 year long jump record
with a mark of 26 feet, 11 1/4 inch
es. He won a silver medal in Tokyo
in 1 964 and a bronze medal in Mex
ico City in 1968, making him the
only long jumper in the world to
have own a set of Olympic gold, sil
ver aid bronze medals. Boston also
wonjgold medals at the 1963 and
1967 pan American Games, setting
new Pan American records at botK
Garrison-Jackson of Houston,
Texas, was unable to attend the
White House Rose Garden ceremo- :
ny because she was competing in
the French Open tennis tournament
in Paris, an event she flew directlv

ceremony in 1982. and which was
her first pry tournament. Garrison
Jackson is one of the highest rank
ing American women in profession
al tennis, and also the most promi
nent African-American women on
the pro circuit. A Houston native
she launched The Zina Garrison All
Cpurt Tennis Academy, an inner
city youth program, in 1992. In
1 993. she added another program to
signing on with Kid Care. Inc. in .
Houston, an organization that deliv
ers hot food to homeless and indi
gent children'.
Her professional career has had
many highlights, among them tri
umphantly representing the United
States in the 1988 Olympics in
Seoul, Korea with a bronze medal in
singles and a gold medal in doubles.
By 198.1 she, was the number one
ranked junior piaver in the world.

Open and the Junior Wimbledon.
Hill of Great Falls. Va. and
born in Baltimore, is a former pro
fessional football player for the Dal
las Cowboys, the Washington Red
skins and the Cleveland Browns. He
NFL Pro Bowl in 1969, 1972, 1973
and 1974, and he played in Super
Bowrv and VI. Since leaving a post
of Vice-President at the Baltimore
Orioles in February of this year, Hill
has continued several consulting
activities that he has pursued for
several years, ? ?
In addition, he is developing
several entrepreneurial projects in
sports and sports marketing. He
attended Riverdale Country School
in New York City on a scholarship,"
and completed his education at Yale
University, graduating in 1969. He
also attended Southern Methodist
University's Perkins School of
Theology.
Griffith Joyner, of Mission
Viejo, Calif., has been Co-Chair of
the PCPFS since last June when she
and Tom McMHlen, a retired pro
fessional basketball player and for
mer Maryland congressman, were
appointed bv President Clinton.
Joyner has elevated women's track
to a new level with her three Gold
and one Silver medal-winning per
formance in the 1988 Summer
Olympics. Her World Record times
in the 100 and 200-meter events,
have earned her the title "World
Fastest Woman." I
