.He was a native of Charlotte, but had lived in High Point -
for 1 8 years.
Easterling is survived by his daughter, Shayla M.
Dawkins, her mother Christine Dawkins both of Greensboro;
his mother, Julia Mae Easterling of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five sis
ters, Peggy Lee Ford-of Bennesville, S.C., Mary Stokes,
Catherine Easterling both of Brooklyn. N.Y., Linda Dines of
High Point and Nancy Gaston of Charlotte; 8 nieces; 6
nephews; a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held June 6 in King's Chapel Holiness
Church, with Elder Dawkins officiating.

4 at her residence.
She was a nativte of Lavonia, Ga. She attended Dunbar
High School and was a retired employee of Philpot Furniture

home; three daughters, Peggy Hairston. Ethel Williams and
Mary Friday all of Lexington; five sons, Norman, James Kelly
Jr. and Raymond (Vickie) Friday all of Lexington, C.P.O. Del
mon (Cynthia) Friday of Hampton, Va. and S.S.G. Thomas
"Craig" (Tammy) Friday. 305th Signal, Bn. Korea; 17 grand
children; 8 great grandchildren; three Stepdaughters; a host of
other relatives and friends.
Services were held June 7 in Union Baptist Church with
the Rev. Rufus Wyatt officiating.
Burial followed in Lexington City Cemetery. Gilmore's

Linda Mae Galloway of 2037 Harrison Ave. died at

She was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem.
Galloway is survived by three sons, John, Monta and
Cedric Galloway all of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Renee
Gallowav: two grandchildren. Anti^na and Terrell; her mother.
Reba A. Galloway of the home; two sisters, Kay (Daniel)
. Webster and Audrey (Terry) Beasley both of Winston-Salem;
two brothers, Clayton and Willie Galloway both of Winston
Salem; a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held, June 11 in the Frances and Jerry
Gilmore Jr. Memorial Chapel. Gilmore's Funeral Directors
handled arrangements.

Ernestine Thompson Johnson of 608 Woodridge Lane
died May 28 at N.C. Baptist Hospital.
She was a native of High Point. She was a graduate of -
William Penn High School and Shaw University. She was an
employee of Evergreen Nursing Home.
Johnson is survived by her husband, Alphonzo Johnson of
the home; two daughters, Mia T. Blue and Deitress McNair
both of High Point; two sons, Carlos L. McNair of Patterson,
N.J. and Mark McNair of High Point; her mother, Annie B.
Murphy Thompson of High Point; six grandchildren; two sis
ters, Johnnie M. Freeman, Mary E. Thompson both of High
Point; two brothers, Willie Thompson and Clinton Thompson
both of San Antonio, Tx.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins,.
other relatives and friends.
Services were held June 5 in Mt. Olive Baptist Church,
with the Rev. Alfred Cheek officiating .
Burial followed in Oak wood Memorial Park. Gilmore's
Funeral Directors handled arrangements.

RAPLEY
Thomas Levern Rapley III of 2008 Hoover Street died
June 1 at N.C. Baptist Hospital.
He was a native of Winston-Salem. He was a member of
Calvary Hill Apostolic Church.
Rapley is survived by two sons, Preston Levern Shell and
Preston Blockson both of Winston-Salem; his mother,
Thomasina R. Bulter of the home; his father. Dr. Franklin B.
Gary of Woodland Hills, Ca.; his stepfather, J.T. Ernest Butler
of the home; two sisters,. Shelia Bruton, Tammy (Keith) Miles
both of Winston-Salem; one brother, Juan Carlos Gary of
Woodland Hills, Ca.; ten uncles; four aunts; a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Services were held June 5 in Frances and Jerry Gilmore

Johnnie Robert James of 153 1 Sharon Road died June 8 at
Winston-Salem Convalescent Center.
He was born on January 13, 1900 in Darlington, S.C. to
the late Inkle and Bannie James. He has been a resident of
Winsion-Salem for over eighty years and was a retired
employee of R.J. Reynolds/Nabisco Company. He was of t!he
Baptist faith.
James is survived by his wife, Margaret Thomas James of
the home; three daughters, Betty J. Hanes, Fannie J. Smith of
Bronx. N.Y. and Norma J. Graham; two sons, Johnnie James (
Jr. of Baltimore, Md. and John (Sandra) Black of Brooklyn,
N.Y.; one sister, Estelle Morrison; a stepson. Leon Hairston;
four devoted grandchildren. LaTonya Graham, Harischa Gra- .
nam, Jerry Hanes Jr. and Jamal Hanes all of Winston-Salem;
ten additional grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren, including
Patricya Livingstone of Winston-Salem;, a host of nieces,
nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services were held June 13 in the Russell Funeral Home
Chapel, with the Rev. J. Donald Ballard officiating.
Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery . Russell's Funeral

Caurie H., Prince; great grandparents, James and Berinia
Kennedy; an aunt Christina Prince; two uncles, Nelson and
Darryl Prince; a great uncle, Broadus Hall; devoted family

Aldridge; other relatives and family friends.

Odessa Catherine Ridgill of 1317 Lincoln Ave. died June
10 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.
She was born on November 5, 1929 in Forsyth County to
the late Edward and Delia Anthony. She attended the New
Hope AME Zion Church in Lewisville. She was a homemak
er's assistantby trade. ?
Ridgill isSurvived by three daughters. Wandella Powers
Partlow. Janice M. Ridgill and Gail Ridgill all of Winston
Salem; three sons, Richard (Pat) Ridgill, Jerry (Phyllis) Ridgill
and Kenneth Ridgill all of Winston-Salem; a brother, Howard
Hawkins of Lewisville; her mother-in-law. Maybell Ridgill of

CATHCART
Johnnie Cathcart of 1720 Shadvmont Ave. died June 7 at
N'.C. Baptist Hospital.
He was born on January 24, 1918 to the late Lark and
Annie Manigault Cathcart in Rock Hill. S.C. He graduated
from Emmett Sqbtt High School, Rock Hill. S.C.. and attended
Friendship College for two yeafs before he was drafted into the
U.S. Army, where he served for four years during World War
II. He graduated from Winston-Salem State University. He
was employed at Carolina Hotel until it closed and. at Albert
Pick Hot^l. where he was in charge of Bell Hops and Dining
Help until his retirement in 1989.
Cathcart is survived by-his wife -Ernestine Getty s Cathcart
of the home; a daughter. Brenda (Roosevelt) Lee of
Youngstown. Ohio; a son. Johnnie E. Cathcart of Winston-,
Salem; three sisters. Isabell Bailey of Greensboro, Sallie Cal
houn of Plainfield. N.J. and Poinsetta Simpson of Buffalo,
N.Y.; two aunts, Carrie Fields, of Buffalo. N.Y. and Ddretha"
Gaines of Washington, D.C.; one uncle, Ira (Janie) Cathcart of
Rock Hill./ S.C. ; one brother-in-law. Joseph Gettys of Plain
field. N.J.; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; a
number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Services were held June 1 1 in First Baptist Church, with

Gwedolyn Scales Crawford of 1701 Shadymont Ave.,
died June 9. : ? ... . ? ?!
She was born February 19, 1911 in Winston-Salem to the
late William Samuel and Mary (Mosby) Scales. She was edu
cated in the local school system and continued her studies at
Howard University where she earned^her Bachelor of. Science
Degree. She taught in the local school system for some twenty
years. She was extremely active in her church and community
having earned numerous honors, including the distinction of
Alpha Kappa Alpha Golden Soror for her more than 50 years
of service to the sprority. She was married to the Rev. William
R. Crawford who preceded her in death and was an inspiration
in both his religious and political careers.
I Crawford is survived by two daughters. Gloria Crawfprd
of Winston-Salem, and Sharon Crawford of the home; qne
grandson. Jamar Eller-Crawford of Winston-Salem; two sis
ters. Willie Mae Heningburg of East Orange. N.J. and Vipla
Trent of Greensboro; one sister-in-law, Sallie Scales of W'in
ston-Salem; a devoted cousin. Ruth Haith of Winsjon-Salenj; a
special friend of the family. Robert Eller and daughter Jamai
lva both of Winston-Salem; three nephews; four nieces; and
many other relatives and friends.
