Shell, a 69 year resi dent,' celebrated her 88th birthday on Sunday. July 17. The celebration began with the family worshiping at; New Bethel Baptist Church, where ?she has been a member for over 50 years. Five of her seven children, two sons-in-law, two grandchildren, one grandson-in-law and a neighbor gathered at 3 p.m. at* her home in the Northwest section of Wins-ton Salem to pay tribute and honor. Employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco for 39 years, she was always involved in her community and her church. In tribute. Juanita Peterson said, "Her simplicity, unfaltering sense of self, generosity of spirit and stead fast belief in^ reverence of self, gen erosity of spirit, and steadfast belief in reverence for education have pro duced a legacy whijbh continuesyto reverberate vibrantly and strength ens with the passage of time." Adult Basic Education Classes Has a Very Successful Year The students, at Adult Basic Education Classes at Brown Dou glas Recreation Center an^ I nion Chapel Baptist had a ver\ success ful year. At Brown- Douglas Recre ation Center Eadie Black. l)oroth\ Gibson, Marie Wvnecoft. Mar\ Jackson and Sim Hill had perlect attendance for the Spring quarter. John Covington, Lula Lyles and Fannie Sprinkle were absent lor only one class meeting. Lizzie Set tle is also a member of the class. Covington planned the closing activity by arranging transportation with Trans-Aid. and contracting the management at the Old Country Buffet for a delicious dinner with fun and fellowship. Two guest for the dinner were Vasthi McNeil and Bencia Benjamin. At Union Chapel Baptist Church, where the Rev. Konnie G. Robinson is pastor, a covered-dish dinner was held in the fellowship hall. Frances Barner was the pianist. Other class members are Eva Hilliam. Annie Medley. Mary Miller. Evelyn Pearson. Cleola Pauling and Matte Marshall. Sarah Ephriam. the former teacher of both, sites, also gave encouraging remarks before she presented certificates of achieve ments to each student. Honorary certificates were awarded to Frances Mobley. age 99. who attended the class with her nieces. Mary Lewis and Matte Marshall, and a certifi cate was given to Beatrice Trues dale. secretary at I'nion Chapel Baptist Church, for clerical assis tance with the class. These classes were coordinated by Paula McCoy through the Con tinuing Education Program a"t Forsyth Technical Community Col lege. WSPA was awarded $1,000 by the State Council of the North Car olina Society for Human Resource Management for being the 1993 Outstanding Chapter of the Year. WSPA. in turn, donated the award money to-the Public Library so materials for human resource pro fessionals can be added to the library's collection.
