CONFERENCE PRESEASON PICKS
Hampton favored to go out winning
1) Hampton's Pirates have too much
depth behind seven preseason all-conference
i players led by OB Matt Mont
gomery 2) Va. State must
? answer questions at the OB
Ji spot after the loss of offensive player of the
year Greg Clark 3) WSStJ offensive, threats
WR Oronde Gadsen (1073 yards, 21.5 per)
and record-breaking FB Richa/d Huntley make
the Rams a threat 4) Fayetteville State's
defense is strong but offense line is lacking 5)
NC Central is the dark horse 6) Norfolk
State's much heralded OB Aaron Sparrow is
reunited With his HS coach 7) Va. Union's
Bobby Phillips is the most exciting back in the
conference 8) Bowie State surprised last year
9) JC Smith will approach 5(X) 10) Eliz. City
has a ways to go 11) Livingstone longer^
1) SC State's offense is expected to put
plenty points on the board with all-MUAC OB
Marvin Marshall and conference
rushing leader Michael Hicks re

niors andespcially QBJav Walker
is hard. Standouts Jose White and Rupert
Grant must lead 3) Delaware State RB Phil
Anderson is the bright spot; a pourous defense
is weakness 4) NC A&T lost their top six
backs but have tough QB| Maceo Bolin 5)
.FAMU has Billy Joe at the helm, and two
sterling DBs (Ken Rileu amdKeino Taylor) 6)
BCC has the legend, new coach Cy McLairen
but that may not help, and 7) Morgan State
lost QB Orlando Persell, must find ways to win.
Albany State poised for repeat

powered offense. led Hv 1 iHHWuaher Ar^onio Leroy,

Not since 1^X4 has a black Vol- v'
flege football plaver caused a stir like
Meiirn State senior OH Stevle "Air II"
AleNair v ^
- He has a host ot NCAA 1-AA records .
m sjght .tor passing and total offense.
Street & Smith s /W4 I'ro Football edir
ti.on rates him the first pick in the 1995
NF L draft. He made the cover of The
^ Sporting News (Aug. 22 edition) and was
featured in a four-page full-color spread
making a case for him as a serious Heisman
Trophy candidate. ' *
I le has won three consecutive S W AC
Player of the Year Award^L He's acandi
nizing the best player in NCAA Div. 1
A A "football and a finalist for the Davey
O'Brien Award noting the best quarter
back in the land.
NFL scouts don't disagree. They
rated him a year ago as the third best
quarterback in the 1994 draft behind Heath
Shuler ?lnd Trent Dilfer, the third and
sixth picks. After testing the waters
McNair decided to return to1 Alcorn to
finish his degree in physical education
where he has maintained a 3.0 average
while making the dean's list every se
mester.
All this adds up to hype unmatched
in black college football since WR
Jerry Rice and QB Willie Totten of tiny
Mississippi Valley State vaulted their
school, their conference (SWAC) and
all of black college football from the
back pages to the forefront of the Ameri
can football scene.
That experience was almost unbe
lievable as Rice and Totten put up mind
4*>ggling numbers? befuddling scouts ant! t
prognosticators alike who said 'the^can't
be that good.' Well/they were.
Totten's records for passing are
still standing and Rice, who became a
first round draft choice of San Fran
cisco is now considered the greatest
wide receiver to ever play.the game.
"AIR II": The right combination of.
lalenUspeed, anlkn u vvlcdge of the
passing game
? #
May he Ilk ^'outK 10. itned iheir les
ion, They k^ow McNair is the' real thing.
And so does his coach.
"What separ itcs him trorn others is
that he's at hisbest wh^n the game'son the
line," said Cardell lones, who has seen his
star engineer fourth quarter comeback wins
six times a year ago.
"He'll be a dominant player early on
because he has all the tools that it takes; size
(6'3" 220 lbs.) he's as elusive as any running
back (over 1,400 yards rushing in his career)
and good overall knowledge of the passing
game. Hell be an impact player right when he
comes out."
According to Alcorn State Sports Infor
mation Director Derrick Hackley, Jackson
ville and Carolina, the two NFL expansion
teams who will pick first in the 1995 draft are
already inundating him with film and stat
requests.
Entering his senior season, McNair is
fifth on the all-time Div. 1-AA total offense
list, ninth in career passing yards and has
thrown 75 touchdown passes. If he has his
normal season; ?700 yards total offense,.
3,100 yards passing and 25 TDs, he will
threaten or surpasseach of.the all-time marks.
As one person said who has seen him
play several times -- "check the schedule, he's
worth the trip."
