"We kicked him off the team for a short time," Mount Tabor * coach Lonnie Pulley said. "Com ing from Pop Warner, which he played last year, he would do the ? same things as in Pop Warner and you can't do that in high school. "We had him sit out for a week and when he came back we had him sign a contract of things we asked of him, like running three gassers after practice. He's gotten to the point where he runs them by himself without having to be told, and he'll even say, 'Coach, I'm going to run now.' It was best for the kid and the team. Now Gene smells success and wants it. He wants to play foot ball/' That was obvious against Parkland as Drummond used sec ond effort, determination, and speed to score on runs of 13 and 2 yards, the latter after a brilliant run in which Drummond looked trapped along the sideline on a sweep, spinned, put his hand down for balance, and then cut across the grain for a 16-yard pick-up to the Mustang's 5-yard line. He scored two plays later to give Mount Tabor a 20 9 hcriftime lead. "This was a typical game for Gene," Pulley said. "He is a slasher with speed." Drummond's 13-yard sweep gave Mount Tabor a 7-3 lead in the first quarter after a 30-yard field goal by Parkland. The Mus tangs regained the lead at 9-7 on a seven-play, 56-yard drive, capped by quarterback Mike Far rar's 12-yard touchdown pass to Shaun Williford. The Spartans responded on their next possession, going 43 yards for a touchdown when Wal ter Hauser bulled over from the two to pu: he host ahead 1 3-9. rh: ihird quarcr featured ball a rol by both teams. "Our big problem was we only had a half day of school today and we had no control over what the kids did-after they left school. We don't know if they went home and napped or if they went out running around," said Parkland coach Rodney Mash burn, whose team evened its record at 2-2 with the loss. "I do know we weren't focused for this game. We didn't want to play tonight. "But Mount Tabor has a good team and they pounded the ball. We knew they were a good run ning team and we knew what they were going to do. We just didn't stop it" Mashburn thought when his team scored to begin the second half that it might shake the Mus tangs out of their lethargy, but not _ even that worked. "We tried a bit of everything to find a weakness in the Mount Tabor defense so w c could get moving, but when v?e c get close, it seemed something would happen to stop us," Mashburn said. Mount Tabor gained 229 yards on the ground as Hauser complemented Drummond's out put with 82 yards on 12 carries. The Spartans picked up 65 yards through the air. "The offensive line blocked - very wellV' Pulley, whose team improved to 3- 1 . "We were short on the varsity this week and the junior varsity line worked on the scout team against the varsity, and I think it helped. They came off the ball well tonight. "This team is beginning to get character. At the first of the year everyone had their own per sonality because we had a lot of young guys from Pop Warner. We told them to forget Pop Warner, everyone is a star in Pop Warner. They now believe in the team concept. This is Mount Tabor High School, not Walter Hauser High School or Gene Drummond High School. The kids have real ized that, and that is why we are now having success." Park|and amassed 224 yards of total offense with 155 coming from the arm of Farrar, who com pleted 14 of 21 passes and one touchdown. III.
