Pitts to Preach at Wake Forest The Rev. Dr. Tyrone Pitts, general secretary of the Progres sive National Baptist Convention, will preach to a joint vice of Wake Forest Baptist Church and First Baptist Church, Highland Avenue in Wait Chapel on the Wake Forest campus Sunday morning, October 29. The Progressive National Baptist Convention is a 2.5 mil lion member Afjican-American organization that held its national convention in Charlotte in August. President Bill Clinton was the featured speaker. Rev. Dr. Pitts is the chief administra tive officer of the progressive National Baptist Convention. Wake Forest Baptist Qiurch, a predominately white congrega tion, and First Baptist Highland Avenue, an African-American church, have undertaken a variety of collaborative activities since the spring of 1994 to help improve race relations. Their relationship has included building a Habitat for Humanity house, a joint youth summer mission trip to Georgia, racial discussion meeting, and a number of joint worship services and pulpit exchanges. In April the two congrega tions received the local United Way's Community Problem Solving Award for their efforts to improve racial understanding. Richard Groves Rev. Dr. Pitts, before moving to his current post, was Director of Racial Justice, Division of Church and Society, for the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA. He continues to serve on the National Council of Churches' general board, exec utive coordinating committee and national mission unit. He also has been director of an American Baptist Urban Min istry program in Los Angeles, associate pastor at Calvary Bap tist Church in Washington, D.C., and serves on boards of a number of national and regional Baptist, Christian and community organi zations. Rev. Dr. Pitts received his undergraduate degree from Vir ginia State University, his mas ter's^ divinity from Colgate Rochester Bexley Hall/Crozier Divinity School and his doctorate from Union Theological Semi nary. Northern Zone Missionary Society Sponsors Rededication The Northern Zone Mission ary Society of the Winston-Salem Greenville District of the Christ ian Methodist Episcopal Church will sponsor a rededication ser vice at St. John C.M.E. Church on Sunday, October 29 at 4 p.m. The Northern Zone Missionary ? Society is comprised of mission aries from ? six Christian Methodist Episcopal Churches in the area- Hanes Memorial, Holsey Memorial (Statesville, * N.C.), Reynolds Temple, St. John Shouse Temple and Wayside. The Northern Zone under the presidential leadership of Alexan dra Jackson has pledged to reded icate itself to service through unity. The theme adopted for the program is "Discipleship 2000: A Missionary Calling." The sub theme is "Rededicating Our selves To Service Through Unity." Jerlyn Travick served as Program Chairperson and coordi nator for the joint fellowship ser vice. Other members of the com mittee were: Marvelle Willoughby, Andrea Robinson, Dorothy Archie-Missionary Pres ident, Hanes Memorial; Dinah Pettigrew - Missionary President, St. John; Margaret Payne - Mis sionary President Shouse Temple; and Masie Clemons - Missionary President, Wayside. The joint fellowship program will consist of a candlelighting rededication service with assis tance from the Rev. Herman r Gilliam, Chaplain for the North r em Zone, the Rev. Doretha Bald win, and Dr. Ronald P. Davis, Sr., host pastor. Music will be pro vided by a combined Missionary choir accompanied by James Smith and Jeralyn Travick under the direction of Peggy Waddell, newly elected Missionary Presi dent for the Winston Salem/Greenville District of the Carolina Comerfende.' I ^ ? , A combined Rpsgie T, Hollis Youth Choir under the direction Dorothy Archie with accompani ment by Verna Simpson will also render musical selections. Dinah Pettigrew will serve as Worship Leader for the program. Other Missionary Presidents for the Northern Zone Include ViCki Hairston-Reynolds Temple and Shirley Mayfield-Holsey Memorial. The public is cordially invited to join the missionaries as they pledge to continue the call ing to spread God's message by a rededication to service with a common goal.
