account for the number of tro
phies his team won, he said, "I
guess that a lot of the best ath
letes came from the East side of
town."
H.R. Malloy ran track, but
he had a reputation for "running
too long in the same spot," he
said with a chuckle. Malloy
recalled how the young men
would often gather under the
tree.
Paul Ledbetter taught math
and science, and he eventually
became an administrator in the
school system.
Rayvon Mitchell was a stu
dent at the school. Because he
lived near the school, he could
hear the demolition. He made
sure that he took photographs of
the school before its final
demise, and he still has a brick
from the original structure.
Henry Jones said the school
was gone before he had time to
get even a brick. Because he
lived on the comer of 14th Street
and Locust Avenue, he walked to
school each day. This was very
convenient for him as a coach
and as a teacher.
When Melville Mauney
attended 14th Street School as a
student, Ulysses Reynolds was
principal. However, when he
taught there, J.D. Ashley was the
principal. The contributions of
Ashley to the community were
never forgotten.
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth
County Board of Education
voted to rename Fairview
Intermediate School for John
Driver Ashley on June 28, 1982.
The name became official July 1.
The proposal for the changes
was presented to the school
board by the late Bernard Foy,
music education coordinator.
"It was quite an honor for
me and my family, one I will
always cherish," said Mrs.
Ashley. She said she is also
thrilled that her husband's photo
graph currently hangs in the
library of Ashley Middle School.
She sees it as a testament to her
husband's dedication to the
youth of the community.
