ARTS/ENTERTAINMENT Smithsonian Scholars to Speak at Symposium Smithsonian Institute scholars Ken Bilby and John Homiak will be featured speak ers in a series of receptions and educational discussions held in association with Winston Salem State University's Win ter Art exhibitions, "Redemp tion Songs: The Self-Taught Artists of Jamaica" and works by Jamaican born artist Hubert Walters. The events will be held Friday, Feb. 7 through Sunday, Feb. 9 at the Diggs Gallery. The Student Govern ment Association will host a meet-the-artists reception Fri day, Feb. 7 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Jamaican artists, musi cians, visiting scholars and the curator will be present. The first symposiums will be held Saturday, Feb. 8 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. John Homiak will do an art presentation on Jamaican Folklife. His lecture is entitled "Black Heart/Art Mon: The Aesthetic Impulse In Jamaican Folklife." Bilby's presentation will be on music in Jamaica and is entitled "Sighting Through Sound: Music Art in Jamaica." Ran dall Morris, the exhibition curator, will also speak. His lecture is entitled "The Half Never Told: An Overlook of the Self Taught Artists of Jamaica." Jamaican music will also be performed. On Sunday, Feb. 9, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., a presentation by Jamaican artists featuring musical per formances by Everald Brown and a spiritual performance by Pastor Geneva Mais will be held. "Redemption Songs: The Self-Taught Artists of Jamaica" features paintings and sculptures of more than 20 artists, including Ras Dizzy, Elijah, Errol McKenzie, Ever ald Brown, Kapo, Leonard rv-i n ?? ? ? uaiey, neginaia tngusn, the rarely seen John Woody ! Joseph, Evadney Cruickshank, Sylvester Woods, Doc Williamson and others. The works are drawn primarily from the collection of Wayne and Myrene Cox, as well as other private lenders. It is the first time the body of work has ever been shown exclusively in an academic setting in the United States. i A. "Redemption Songs" has all the ingredients for a "viewer-friendly" exhibition Three to five pieces of each artist's work will be exhibited along wjtji wall documentation and photographic contextual ization. Videos of the artists will be shown. An accompany ing catalog with an essay by Randall Morris, as well as statements by many of the artists and a bibliography on Jamaica will document the exhibition and place the works in an art historical context. The catalog will provide some of the first written documentation in the country of this important area of artmaking. Sculpture and paintings will be featured, as well as religious banners by Elijah, who recently held a one-person show at the Musee dart Brut in Lausanne, Switzerland. Some environ mental elements will be lent by artists as well. The art work by Hubert Walters will feature paintings, sculptures and figurines. A commercial fisherman and boat builder for more than two decades, Walters was born in Jamaica in 1931. In 1971, Wal ters immigrated to the Untied States, settled in New York and began working as a carpenter. Only two years later Walters and his wife left the city for North Carolina, where they settled in Troutman and worked in textile mills. Want ing to devote his time to mak ing art, Walters retired from mill work, later exhibiting and selling his art at flea markets. Thursday through Saturday, April 10-12 the public is invited to visit Diggs Gallery (during regular hours) to watch Walters build one of his boat sculptures from bondo and other materials.
