A Kimberly Park Alumni The 61st Founders Day cel ebration of the Kimberly Park Alumni Association of Win ston-Salem State University will be held March 21 at 7 p.m. at the Anderson Center. Program participants will include the Rev. Douglas Sum mers of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, the Praise Dancers of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, the Inner Rhythm Choir and John M. Poindexter IV. A Summer Program Registration * Registration for the Sum mer Program at Winston-Salem State University will be held March 22. April 12 is the date for physicals. Urban League Guild sponsors scholarship Joan Cardwell, guild presi dent, stated that the Winston Salem Urban League Guild has distributed the Mollie L. Moon Urban League Guild Memorial Award scholarship applications to guidance counselors in the local high schools. The scholarship is for $5,000. Also, the applications are available at the Urban League office from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The deadline for completing the applications is Monday, April 7. They should be returned to the Winston-Salem Urban League office at 201 W . Fifth St., Win ston-Salem, NC 27101. The Mollie L. Moon Urban League Guild Memorial Award provides educational assistance to African-American high school seniors. The Urban League Guild Scholarship Award is named in honor of Guild founder, Mollie L. Moon. Applicants must be African American seniors graduating from a public or private school, rank in the top 25 percent of their graduating class, and have a mini mum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 system. The applicants must also have been accepted for admission into a two- or four-year accredited educational institution commenc ing classes in the current calendar year of the award and have partic ipated a minimum of six months of community service within the year of application. Consideration will be given to applicants based on economic need. This is a gen eral scholarship and is not associ ated with a specific field of study. The National Urban League Guild was organized in the sum mer of 1942 "to further the activi ties of the Urban League, to pop ularize the League among sections of the community previ ously not touched by its activities and to lend financial support to the League." The founder and the first president was Mollie L. Moon, of New York City. The Guild proved Members of the Scholarship Committee are, left to right, Lois Turner, Joan Cardwell, Velma Friende and Alberta McMillion. to be so successful supporting the National Urban League that it became evident that the same type of organization could be helpful to local Urban leagues. The enthusiasm generated by the National Urban League Guild spearheaded the organization of 27 local Guilds in the next few years. Moon organized the first Guild in Canton, Ohio, in 1948. ? The Winston-Salem Urban League Guild was begun in 1957. Today, there are 65 active guilds in the Urban League movement, with a total of nearly 3,000 mem bers.
