June 1,1997 Poe steps down as Carver's basketball coach BY SAM DAVIS Chronicle Sports Editor Alfred Poe, who was named athletics direc tor at Carver High School last week, has hand ed in his resignation as Carver's head basketball coach. Poe said he and principal Dan Piggott agreed that it would be in the best interest of the program if he resigned as the basketball coach so that he could devote a full-time effort into running the Yellowjackets' overall sports program. "Anytime that you give up doing something that you enjoy its going to be tough," Poe said. "I've been coaching basketball at Carver for 25 years and it's going to take a little getting used to. But I have to look to the future and having been named the athletics director I am looking for a new challenge." Poe said he had already begun to work alongside Robert Wynn, who preceded him as the athletics director at Carver. "We're working to make the transition a smooth one and keep the program rolling ? along," Poe said. "We want to keep the stan dard high for the sports program." ? Poe said that Piggott and Wynn will work quickly to fill the vacancy. "I'm sure Mr. Piggott will follow the normal procedure for hiring through the school system and have someone in place soon," Poe said. Poe, a North Carolina Central graduate, took over at Carver during the era when the school was a 9-10 grade high school. In twelve seasons he led the team to a 175-14 record and 10 city-county championships. He led the Yellowjackets to a 300-116 record since Carver became a senior high school (9-12 grade) in 1984. Poe's teams captured three conference championships, two sectional championships and three Frank Spencer Holiday Classic titles.
