Delta Sigma Theta Sorority
to host Fashion Fair
Since the early
1970s when the
Greensboro
Alumnae Chapter of
Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority Inc. first hosted
Ebony Fashion Fair,
excitement soars when
the date for the event
approaches.
Each year, the chapter .
sponsors two major I
benefits for its '
scholarship fund; the
fashion show in the fall
and the Jabberwock Pageant in the
spring.
The pageant is an extravaganza
in which high school young ladies
who are seniors are featured.
Thirty five prospective 1998
Jabber-wockettes and their parents
have already met with committee
members and have been
introduced to the membership at
the October sorority meeting. The
young lady raising the most money
will be crowned Miss Jabberwock.
Out of funds generated by the
two events, the sorority has
awarded approximately $190,500
in the past three years. Both
activities have become essential
and highly acclaimed in the
Greensboro community.

Greensboro Alumnae
is one ot approximately 900
chapters of Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority in the United States and
abroad, whose purpose is to
provide service programs to
promote human welfare. At the
inception of the sorority in 1913 on
the campus of Howard University
in Washington, D.C., 22 founders,
young and full of vision, proposed
an organization pledged to serious
endeavors and community service.
The Greensboro Chapter, chartered
55 yedrs ago, has involved itself in
projects reflecting the vision of the
founders and the national program
thrusts. Members share their skills

History of the Greensboro
Alumnae Chapter of Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
In December 1941, nine
members of Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority Inc. met in
Greensboro in the home
of Dr. and Mrs. Warmoth T. Gibbe
to request from the national body
the establishment of a graduate
chapter. The graduate sorors
continued to meet through the
spring of 1942, until their dream
of p chapter in this city was
realized.
The chapter was chartered as
Beta Mu Sigma on May 24, 1942,
with Marian Palmer Capps,
regional director, officiating. The
ceremony was held in the home of
Dr. ft Mrs. Warmoth T. Gibbs.
Their daughter, Elizabeth Gibbs,
one of the charter members,
became the Chapter's first
president. Other charter
members were Lenore Barry,
Selma Boone, Mae Sue Roberts,
Estelle Smith, Regina Smith,
Ellen Torrance, and Georgie
Willis.
Beta Mu Sigma was originally
a part of the Eastern Region, but
in 1960, due to reorganisation
mandated by the national
organization, Beta Mu Sigma
became a part of the newly
created region, the South Atlantic
Region.
In 1963, Grand Chapter
authorized the change of
graduate Delta chapters to
geographic names. Beta Mu
Sigma then became Greensboro
Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority Inc. For more
than half a century now,
