Goler celebrates 116 years Goler AME Zion Church celebrated 116 years of worship, praise and service Nov. 7-9 follow ing 50 days of fasting and praying. Many spoke of the blessings they received as a result of the entire church embarking on the fast. Among the highlights of the anniversary was the presentation of six newly ordained ministers and one ordained elder, the Rev. Wayne T. Greene. Durii^the 11 a.m. worship service, the Rev. Fermin Bocanegra, the guest speaker, was presented with a Leading By Example plaque for his outstand ing work in the field of human rights and equal opportunity. Helping present the awards were Rep. Larry Womble and William Tatum of the NAACP. A standing-room-only crowd attended the Sunday evening con cert featuring the PRJ Ensemble and the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Mass Choir. The mistress of cere monies was the Rev. Conita Hunt. The master of ceremonies was the Rev. Dairl Scott. Another anniversary highlight The newly ordained ministers arm tho Hove. Pamela H. The children of Goler spon sored a Sunday School program featuring their gifts and talents through song and readings. The fund raiser for the NAACP was a big success. Goler has committed further to offering 50 percent off memberships to first-time NAACP members. This offer is good for all Goler mem bers and the community at large until Dec. 15. Special recognition was given to Bertha Frost, Miller Williams and Mary Lindsay for their many years of faithful and dedicated ser vice to Goler Memorial. Goler officials expressed appreciation to the Winston-. Salem community, who came out to help celebrate the anniversary. Beulah Baptist to ordain Haywood Leach Nov. 23 Beulah Baptist will hold an ordination service Nov. 23 at 4 p.m. for Haywood Leach. Leach is a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem. His parents are the late Robert L. Leach and Ida Mae McMillian. He is the proud father of three children, Beverly Melton and Tykirah Howell, who live locally, and Robert L. Leach, who is serving in the U.S. Navy, stationed in New Jersey. He also has three grandchildren on whom he dotes, Ciera Leach, Elysa Melton, and Chowan Melton. Leach attended the local schools in Winston-Salem. He worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and retired after 31 years. After many years of not being part of a church family, he joined Beulah Baptist Church and was baptized. He is presently a mem ber of the Men's Choir, the ? - - Haywood loach Spiritual Choir, the Prayer Band Choir, and is secretary of the Missionary Ministry. Special guests will be the Rock Hill Baptist Church from Belews Creek, where the Rev. Billy Ray Smith is pastor. L.B. Ford is the host pastor. St Andrew's Little Miss crowned The St. Andrew's Fall Drive Coronation got off to a great start Sunday, Nov. 9. Elva Johnson gave a heartfelt welcome, followed by Mashard Wilson, who read the scripture, then Kendall Carter led the prayer. The processional started with seven contestants marching down the aisle in white dresses holding roses, to signify love. Afterward the Angelic and Children's Choir of First Baptist Church sang songs such as "How Did Moses Cross the Red Sea," "Look At the Flowers," "I Love You," "This Is the Day," and many others. Then came the coronation. Little Miss St. Andrews 1997-98, Christina Astrop, was crowned. She is the daughter of Katina McNair. Her court included first runner-up Adrianne Payne, daughter of Monique Payne; and second runner-up Charee Cuthrell, daughter of Davette Cuthrell. The other contestants were Alisha Stephens, daughter of Michelle Terry; Kristen Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Virmell Johnson; Adrienne Eaton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Eaten; and Marquisha Grinton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marthaniel Grinton. The contestants' activities during the drive included a trip to Holy Land in Bedford, Va., hosting October birthdays, greeting worshipers, and enjoying a pizza party just for them. A representative of St. Andrew's said the church was grateful to everyone involved for a successful Fall Drive. The Rev. Moses Hodnett is pastor. Do your bills have you in the dog house?
