Li Brother Ben RufTin said he is grateful for the example Wheeler shows to the younger brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi. RufTin chuckled as he remembered how Wheeler wore his Kappa hat, shirt and even socks when they went to visit. Although Wheeler can not speak, he responded when the men sang the Kappa Hymn as he mouthed the words and even shed tears of acknowledgement. "When we gave him the sign, he nodded, and it was so touching and moving. He shed tears of joy, and we knew he was very appreciative," RufTin said. Wheeler's lifetime achievement scrapbook includes many awards and citations. Wheeler was the first musical director of "Don't Bother Me, ! Can't Cope" in Winston-Salem in 1977 at the Little Theatre. The theater had been built for 30 years, but this per formance marked the first time a black cast performed on stage at the Little Theatre. Dorothy Graham Wheeler was then the director of Urban Arts, and her husband directed "Jazz Transit," an Arts Council program to briog jazz into com munity recreation centers and parks.
