Hardluck West Forsyth looks for improvement m- ? - ?* B) Sam Dwit , Ihr Ctmmhlr Spuria KJitax Things could be better for West Forsyth's junior varsity basketball .team. But they could also be ^ worse. according to Coach Mike ?Morgan. Ihc Titans come into the l.ash/Chronicle Tournament with a 4-3 record. They last played on Dec. 18 when they dropped a lop sided loss to North Forsyth. I "The good thing is we've won jnore games than we've lost," ?Morgan said. "With all the inexpe rience we have. I feel fortunate that we've won four games. We're 4-3 and we could very easily be 0-7. .1 itans siuiiic. ..a. "He was the only starter back Jrom last year and we were looking for him to be our leader," Morgan 4aid. Without Jennings, the Titans have been up and down on offense. The bright spot on ofTcnse has been the play of Kevin Bray, a 6-4 forward. Bray leads the team ins scoring with a 13-point average. He also averages doubje figures in rebounding. Mart) t'hipman ha* 1'tiled in at the point He ha* been consistent running the offense, but has pro vided only four points per game. The other starters, forwards William Webster. Eric King and Tripp Bla/er have all been up and down during the first seven ganpes. _ "We're real inexperienced." Morgan said " I he good thing is I see signs that we're getting better. We're playing a lot of freshmen, so we're going to make a lot of mis takes." Morgan said he hopes his team will fittd a way to steady themselves. One thing that might help the Titans is the addition of point guard CJ. Paul. Paul, a 5-9 fresh man. had been paying with the West Forsyth varsity before the break, but has been added to the junior varsity roster "We hadn't really had a true point guard," Morgan said. "We had a lot of people playing out of position. I think the addition of C.J. is really going to help us. He's very talented and that could be the boost that we need to.gct going." Pinnix, Reynolds' ninth-grade coach, says his team may not be the most talented in the bracket. But the Demons won't be outworked. "We're a blue-collar team," Pinnix says. "We may not be the most athletic team you'll find, but we're going to bring our lunch every day and work hard the whole game." The Demons' victories have come by an average of 20 points. RJR has defeated North Surry, East Surry, Parkland and Greensboro Page. They hope to keep that streak alive when they take on Mount Tabor on Saturday (Jan. 3). Brandon Sentcr and Thomas Barrier have been the Demons' top two scorers in their first four games. Senter, RJR's point guard has led the team in three of their games. He had a season-high 24 points in the victory over East Surry. For the season he's averaging 12 points " We may not be the most athletic team you'll find, but we're going to bring our lunch every day and work hard the ' whole game." ? Coach Chris Pinnix hustle their oppo nents. "Marcus^ Brandon, and Seddrick are our captains,** Pinnix says. **They really provide a lot of leadership on and off the court. They are really Tike an extension of the coach.** a game. David Wood, another post player, averages seven points per game. Wood is a battler on the boards. Marcus Burgess and Seddrick Morgan round out the starting five. Burgess and Morgan are both very aggressive on the defen sive side of the court and have the type work ethic that Pinnix said has helped the team out The Demons also have players who come in off the bench to spell the starters without the team missing a beat. The first three play ers off the bench are John Felton, Marcus Hunt and Ryan Ebrom. "Those three guys have been doing a great job of coming in off the bench and giving us a spark," Pinnix says. The scoring after Barrier, Senter and t\iicr wou three, afljrvnreF the other player* could be th? next high scorer," Pinnix says. "We are very versatile, we can go big, or small and try to create olT the break." Because of the way the team plays hard each game Pinnix has played all 13 of his players in every game and each has scorer. "They all play and contribute," Pinnix says. "These kids work their butts off. They're a blue collar bunch. No one will out work us in a game. As a coach, the only thing that I could ask them to do is give me everything they have on and off the court. Then we just let the wins and losses fall where they fall. I'll b{ satisfied as a coach as long a* they work hard." Another plus for the pro gram is having an assistant at his side. "Andre Gould has been a big help to the team," Pinnix said. "He's doing a good job of help ing out." MftfilPU32 ITIqI RJ Reynold*' ninth gradm tmam * More than 50 pre-owned vehicles-all for $9f999 or less i and all covered by a 1-year warranty! ,' 'SMALL MID.
