In the ninth-grade bracket Parkland ? surprised the field by taking the champi onship after defeating a tough Greensboro Smith squad. Carver relied on the inside play of Carv0r freshman Keegan Haggins to capture its title. Haggins was named the tourna ment's most valuable player. The Yellowjackets I also had a strong supporting cast that was I relentless down the stretch run of each game. P Coach Bobby Moore's team played perhaps *3 .At a..1 ' phy, Moore said his team had "exceeded all expectations"^ The Yellowjackets' players also said they felt a sense of accomplishment. "We felt like we had been overlooked." said Ryan Braham. "Everyone was talking about Reynolds and Mount Tabor. No one seemed to take us seriously." "the rest of the way and finished the season with a 20-3 record to capture the Central Piedmopt 4-A Junior Varsity champi pnship Parkland's.ninth graders got little respect going into the tournament, but the Mustangs managed to put together back to-back wins to capture the first-ever ninth grade championship The Mustangs defeated Reynolds 48-34 in the first round and then watched as Greensboro Smith pulled oft an upset to defeat Mount Tabor by a narrow 45-43 , margin. - , That set up a battle between Parkland and Smith in the championship game Parkland escaped with the victory in the tightly-contested battle.
