Hanes Hosiery Recreation All-Stars defeat I Williams C. Sims Center All-Stars 76-55 I The Hanes Hosiery 14-and undc All-Stars, recent winners of the 1998 Southeaster Regional Championship, continued their winning ways by defeating the William C. Sims Center All-Stars in the Winston-Salem Recreation Dept. "All-Star Spring Shootout". The Hosiery, which was playing without Shelton Dswis, its leading scorer, jyumped out to an early lead adn never let up in coming through with the victory. CJ. Ran dall and Vic Davidson led the way for Hanes Hosiery. Randall, who had a game-high 22 points and also collected seven rebounds, and Davidson, who came through with 12 points and six rebounds in the game, provided the spark. Hanes Hosiery took an eight point lead at the half and never looked back. Jevon Scipio and Ray Bristow warmed up for the Sims Center in the second half, but the team wasn't able to take the lead. Jamar Peterkin, Greg Glenn and Chris Thomas helped the Hosiery hold on to its lead and extend it. Behind a trapping full-court press, the Hosiery was able to put the game away. Glenn finished the game with 16 points, Peterkin added 11 and Robert Coleman chipped in with six. Thomas scored five, Reginald "Juice" Price had three and Robert Bortins rounded out the scoring with a point. Scipio's 25 points led the way for the Sims Center. Jeff Middle ton scored 13, Bristow scored 12, Paris Barnes added and Tremon Springs scored two. Middleton topped the Sims rebounders with eight. I Carolina Hornets 12-and-under finish 2nd in State AAU Hoops Tournament The boys 12-and-under team from the Carolina Hornets came just short of capturing the State AAU Basketball championship last weekend, falling to the Charlotte Royals 59-57 in dou ble overtime of the title game. The Hornets qualified for a berth in the 12-and-under Boys National Tournament, which will be held in Greensboro, July 32-11. Charlotte fought back from a 28-20 halftime deficit to win the game. The Hornets had surged to their lead behind the play of Sean Mosley, JaRick Boxley and Chris Gaynor. The Royals went to full-court pressure defense in the third period and it enabled them to cut the Hornets' lead to 35-31 at the end of the quarter. The Hornets held a 45-43 " lead in the final seconds of regu lations before the Royals scored on a follow shot at the buzzer to force overtime. In the first overtime, the two teams matched each other's point production, sending the game into a second extra period. The Royals took control early and then held on to take the championship. Mosley led the Hornets' scor ers with 17 points. Gaynor scored 11 and Michael Davis added 10. Mosely also led the team in rebounding with eight, followed by five for Boxley, Davis, Gaynor and Brian Mitchell. The loss dropped the team's record to 16-2. The Hornets advanced to the championship game by defeat ing the third-ranked Greensboro Gaters 53-37. The Hornets jumped out to an early lead and cruised to victory in the game. The Hornets' employed a full court pressure defense to take a 30-21 halftime lead. The Gaters put up resistence in the third quarter, but the Hornets were able to maintain a 41-32 advan tage going into the fourth quar ter. The Hornets strong half court man-to-man defense enabled them to shut down the Gaters and put the game away. Mosley led all scorers with 16 poihts. Davis and Gaynor added eight points each. The Hornets were able to control the back boards, holding a 36-22 advan tage in rebounding. Mosley led the Hornets rebounders with eight, with Boxley, Davis, Gaynor and Mitchell adding five each. The quarterfinal matchup paired the Hornets with the top ranked Charlotte Stars. The Hornets advanced by taking a 78-68 victory. Davis scored 29 points, including we in the First period to get the Hornets out of the gate quickly. Behind Davis' scoring, the Hornets jumped to a 23-19 advantage at the end of the first period, stretched it to 44-27 at the half and never looked back. The Stars were able to cut into the lead in the third quarter, axing the lead to 53-47, but that was as close as they could come the rest of the way. The Hornets extended their lead to 60-49 at the end of the third quarter and held on down the stretch. Gaynor and Boxley added 13 and 12 points, respectively, to back Davis. Mitchell and Mosley contribued seven rebounds each to help the Hor 4 nets dominate the backboards.
